Luxury Watch Row: DK Shivakumar Vows Resignation If Proven He Lied, Retorting to BJP Leader.

Bengaluru, December 5, 2025 – Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has strongly refuted allegations made by BJP leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy regarding his ownership of luxury watches, escalating the ongoing controversy. Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress President, challenged Narayanaswamy to resign if his claims prove false, stating he would do the same.

The controversy revolves around accusations that Shivakumar did not properly disclose the details of his expensive watches in his affidavit. Narayanaswamy also questioned whether the watches were purchased or stolen.

Addressing reporters in Bengaluru, Shivakumar asserted that he has already submitted all necessary details regarding his watches to the Lokayukta (an anti-corruption authority). He challenged Narayanaswamy to verify these details personally. "If I have lied about this matter, I will resign immediately. Otherwise, will he resign?" Shivakumar declared.

Shivakumar rebuked Narayanaswamy for speaking "without basic knowledge" and suggested he was seeking publicity. "If someone wants to comment, they should first understand the issue. Don't talk just for publicity. I act with more responsibility than him," the Deputy Chief Minister stated. He further responded sarcastically to the question of whether the watch was stolen by saying he stole it from Narayanaswamy's residence.

This is not the first time the issue of luxury watches has surfaced in Karnataka politics. Previously, BJP leaders targeted both Shivakumar and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over their expensive timepieces. Shivakumar defended himself and the Chief Minister, asserting that they both have the right to wear what they like. He stated that he purchased his watch for ₹24 lakh in Australia seven years ago and has declared it in his election affidavit.

The BJP has used the issue to accuse Siddaramaiah of hypocrisy, alleging he leads an extravagant lifestyle while claiming to be a socialist. The BJP criticized Siddaramaiah for flaunting a Santos de Cartier watch while the people of Karnataka struggle with drought and infrastructure issues.

Shivakumar stated that he inherited his appreciation for watches from his father, who owned seven watches. He has emphasized the transparency of his financial disclosures, stating, "I have openly declared everything about the expensive watches I own. I know about the purchase of that watch – what do BJP leaders know?". He also added that he knows his affidavit, he paid the money for the watch using his credit card, and there is nothing to learn from Narayanaswamy.

In related news, Shivakumar highlighted the government's commitment to women's empowerment, referencing initiatives undertaken since he assumed the role of Minister for Irrigation. He cited an instance where women IAS officers resolved an encroachment issue within a month, underscoring their efficiency and capabilities.
