Shyok, Ladakh – Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the strategically significant Shyok Tunnel and dedicated 125 infrastructure projects completed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to the nation on Sunday. The event, held in Shyok, Ladakh, saw the physical inauguration of the 920-meter-long Shyok Tunnel and the virtual unveiling of multiple projects spanning across various states and union territories. These projects aim to bolster connectivity in forward and remote areas, enhancing both military readiness and socio-economic development in the border regions.
Addressing the gathering after the inauguration, Rajnath Singh acknowledged the significance of "Op Sindoor," a codename often associated with critical infrastructure development and operational readiness enhancement in border areas. While praising the BRO's efforts, the Defence Minister remarked, "Could have done much more, but...", hinting at the immense potential and the continuous need for infrastructure upgrades in the strategically vital region. Sources suggest that Singh's comment alluded to the challenging terrain and weather conditions that often impede project execution, as well as the ever-present need to outpace the infrastructure development on the other side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
The Shyok Tunnel, constructed on the Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldi (DSDBO) road, is a crucial artery for military and civilian transport in eastern Ladakh. The region is known for its harsh winters, heavy snowfall, landslides, and avalanches, which often disrupt surface transportation for extended periods. The tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity, ensuring the swift movement of troops and supplies to forward locations, thereby strengthening India's defense posture. Moreover, it will facilitate the socio-economic development of remote villages by ensuring uninterrupted access to essential goods and services.
The 125 projects dedicated to the nation include 28 roads, 93 bridges, and four other strategic initiatives. These projects are located in various states and union territories, including Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh, and are designed to improve connectivity to remote areas, reduce travel time to forward posts, and enhance the overall infrastructure landscape in border regions.
During his visit, Rajnath Singh also reviewed the security situation in Eastern Ladakh along the LAC with China. He received a detailed briefing from senior army officials on the operational preparedness of the forces and the prevailing security scenario. The Defence Minister reiterated the government's commitment to strengthening the country's defense infrastructure and ensuring the well-being of the armed forces personnel guarding the borders.
In addition to the Shyok Tunnel, a Three-Dimensional (3D) printed habitat at Chandigarh was also dedicated to the nation. This complex exemplifies modern defense infrastructure technology and demonstrates the potential for fast-track construction capabilities in the future.
