OTP for Tatkal Railway Tickets: A New Rule to Know Before Booking and Travel.

Indian Railways has implemented a new rule requiring mandatory One-Time Password (OTP) verification for all Tatkal ticket bookings, both online and at reservation counters. This measure aims to enhance transparency, security, and ensure fair access to tickets, while also curbing the misuse of the Tatkal booking system by agents.

The New OTP-Based System

Under this new system, passengers booking Tatkal tickets at reservation counters or online via the IRCTC website or app will receive an OTP on the mobile number provided in the reservation form. The ticket will only be confirmed after successful OTP verification.

The Railway Ministry initiated the OTP-based Tatkal ticketing system on a pilot basis on November 17, 2025, initially involving a few trains and later expanding to 52 trains. The Railway Ministry stated that the OTP-based reservation mechanism will be implemented at counters for all the remaining trains in the next few days.

Objectives of the New Rule

  • Curbing Misuse: The primary goal is to prevent misuse of the Tatkal facility, particularly by booking agents who exploit the system for their own profit.
  • Ensuring Fair Access: By making OTP verification mandatory, the Railways aim to provide genuine passengers with better access to high-demand Tatkal tickets.
  • Enhancing Transparency and Security: The new rule adds an extra layer of security to the ticket booking process, making it more transparent and reliable.

How the New Process Works

  1. Booking at Reservation Counters: Passengers filling out the reservation form must provide their mobile number. An OTP will be sent to this number. The ticket is confirmed only after the passenger provides the OTP to the reservation clerk.
  2. Online Booking via IRCTC:
    • Log in to the IRCTC website or mobile app using your credentials.
    • Select "Tatkal" under the booking type and enter the source, destination, travel date, and class.
    • Enter passenger details, including names, ages, and contact numbers.
    • Complete Aadhaar OTP verification when required.
    • An OTP will be sent to the mobile number linked with Aadhaar. Enter this OTP to proceed with the booking.
    • Make the payment and download the e-ticket.

Other Measures to Prevent Misuse

In recent months, the Railway Ministry has introduced several other measures to ensure fair access to ticket reservations and discourage booking agents from exploiting the ticketing system. These include:

  • Aadhaar Verification: In July 2025, the ministry made Aadhaar verification mandatory through OTP for online ticket reservations under the Tatkal system across the country.
  • Restrictions on Agents: IRCTC agents are prohibited from booking Tatkal tickets within the first 30 minutes of the booking window. This restriction is implemented to minimize bulk bookings and ensure a level playing field for the general public.
  • From October 1, 2025, only Aadhaar-authenticated users are permitted to book reserved general tickets through the IRCTC website or app during the first 15 minutes after bookings open for any train.

Impact and What to Keep in Mind

The new OTP-based Tatkal ticket booking rule is a significant step towards making the ticketing process more secure and fair. Passengers are advised to keep their contact details updated with IRCTC and ensure that their mobile number is active during the booking process.

With these measures in place, Indian Railways aims to provide a smoother and more transparent Tatkal booking experience for all passengers.
