Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India – Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserted Friday that Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, often called Veer Savarkar, never received the appropriate recognition for his contributions to Indian society, particularly his efforts to eradicate social evils. Shah made these remarks while unveiling a statue of Savarkar and inaugurating the 'Veer Savarkar Inspiration Park' in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The event was attended by Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), an organization that Shah said is truly advancing Savarkar’s ideology. Shah described the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as "sacred land" where freedom fighters sacrificed their lives, emphasizing the historical significance of the location in India's struggle for independence.
Shah lauded Savarkar as a social reformer and a true patriot who fought courageously against the evils prevalent within Hindu society, including untouchability. He noted that Savarkar continued to progress despite facing opposition from the community. Shah highlighted Savarkar's recognition of the 1857 revolt as India's first war of independence, contrasting it with the British perspective. He urged Indian academics to rewrite history from an Indian perspective, documenting the contributions of overlooked kingdoms and personalities.
In addition to praising Savarkar, Shah also acknowledged the contributions of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and his Indian National Army in the liberation of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He reflected on the islands' history as a place of sacrifice, where many freedom fighters were hanged, and families often lost contact with those imprisoned there.
Shah expressed that the newly unveiled park and statue would inspire future generations to protect cultural nationalism and realize Savarkar's dreams. He conveyed his sentiments on X, stating that Savarkar's life inspires boundless love for the motherland and that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands stand as a testament to the sacrifices, dedication, and courage of numerous freedom fighters, including Savarkar.
Shah also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for restoring India's respect on the global stage. He noted that the world now pays attention to India's perspective and listens when the Prime Minister speaks on international developments.
