Priyanka Gandhi as Congress’s PM Face? Speculation Intensifies
New Delhi: The possibility of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the Indian National Congress's (INC) prime ministerial candidate has gained traction after recent endorsements and statements, sparking debate within the party and drawing reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
On Tuesday, Congress Lok Sabha member Imran Masood publicly supported Priyanka Gandhi, the current Lok Sabha member for Wayanad, Kerala, as a potential prime ministerial candidate. Masood drew comparisons between her and her grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, suggesting Priyanka possessed the same resolve and capacity to counter anti-India narratives. He referenced Indira Gandhi's actions in relation to Pakistan, implying Priyanka would similarly address anti-India sentiments.
When questioned about Rahul Gandhi's potential role if Priyanka were to become Prime Minister, Masood emphasized the siblings' ideological unity, stating they are "like two eyes of one face" and that Rahul would act similarly.
Priyanka Gandhi, a member of the Nehru-Gandhi family, entered electoral politics in November 2024, winning the Wayanad seat previously held by her brother, Rahul Gandhi. She also serves as a General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). Before entering Parliament, Priyanka played a significant role in the Congress party, including spearheading election campaigns and taking on organizational responsibilities.
Robert Vadra, Priyanka Gandhi's husband, has also publicly supported her entry into politics. In the past, he has expressed his belief that she "should be in Parliament" and highlighted her dedication to the people. When asked about the increasing calls for Priyanka to take on a larger role, Vadra responded, "There are demands from everywhere".
The BJP has reacted to Priyanka Gandhi's growing prominence in the political arena. Some BJP leaders have criticized her statements and questioned her understanding of parliamentary proceedings. In December 2024, BJP leaders responded to Priyanka's criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech in the Lok Sabha, with one leader suggesting she might not grasp the "nuances" of the Prime Minister's remarks due to her being a newly elected MP. Other BJP figures have accused the Gandhi family of historical constitutional compromises.
Priyanka Gandhi's entry into politics and potential future leadership role occur against the backdrop of ongoing debates about leadership and strategy within the opposition. While the Congress party has often presented Rahul Gandhi as its primary face for the Prime Minister's position, voices within the party are increasingly advocating for Priyanka Gandhi to assume a more prominent role. Her performance as an MP and her ability to connect with voters will likely play a key role in shaping her future in Indian politics.
