In a recent interview, Vikramaditya Motwane, the director of the critically acclaimed film "Lootera," has lauded Ranveer Singh's dedication and intensity as an actor, describing him as a "volcano". Motwane recounted the challenging experience of shooting "Lootera". The period drama, released in 2013, is considered a significant film in Ranveer Singh's career, showcasing his versatility and commitment to his craft.
Motwane recalled a particularly difficult period during the film's production in Dalhousie. The team's initial attempt to shoot in January 2012 was thwarted by extreme snowfall, which caused the sets to collapse. They returned in March, but Ranveer Singh soon suffered a back injury. Despite the pain, Singh was determined to continue shooting, particularly for a scene where his character had to remove a bullet from his waist.
To authentically portray his character's pain, Ranveer went to extreme lengths. He asked Motwane what he could do to feel the pain, and then he took black paper clips and pinned them near his waist to simulate the sensation of being wounded. He then started running up and down the hills to get himself in the zone. After completing the scene, Singh removed the clips and collapsed due to a severe back spasm, which he hadn't noticed because he was so focused on the pain in his side. He had to be airlifted from Dalhousie the next day, leading to the cancellation of the shooting schedule.
Despite these challenges, Motwane admires Singh's dedication, noting how hard the actor worked to capture the essence of the moment. Motwane said that Ranveer was so engrossed in feeling the pain of his character that he completely ignored his spasm and eventually collapsed. Motwane told Ranveer to just act, but Ranveer wanted to feel the pain.
Ranveer's commitment to his roles is well-known in the industry. For his role as Alauddin Khilji in "Padmaavat," he isolated himself and even consulted a psychiatrist to overcome the negativity of the character. His performance as Kapil Dev in "83" also earned him widespread praise. Ranveer himself has admitted to being a raw actor early in his career.
"Lootera," though not a box-office success, is remembered for the chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha and is considered an important film in Ranveer's career. The film is an adaptation of O. Henry's short story "The Last Leaf".
