Amidst renewed speculation about a possible sequel to the beloved 2009 film "3 Idiots," actor R Madhavan has expressed his reservations, suggesting that revisiting the movie might be "idiotic". The original film, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, starred Aamir Khan, Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi as three engineering students challenging the conventional norms of the Indian education system.

Madhavan, in a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, addressed the recurring rumors of a sequel. While acknowledging that a sequel "sounds great," he also deemed it "far-fetched". His primary concern revolves around the age of the actors, stating, "All three of us, Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and I are much older now. Where do we go in the sequel? What are our lives like now? It is an interesting thought. But hardly conducive to a proper sequel. I would love to work with Raju Hirani again. But '3 Idiots' again? I think that would be idiotic".

Aamir Khan, who played the iconic character Rancho, has also responded to the sequel buzz. While expressing his fondness for the film and the character, stating Rancho is the most popular character he’s played, he clarified that no one has approached him regarding a sequel. He said he would be happy to revisit the world of "3 Idiots," but the sequel chatter hasn't translated into anything concrete yet.

Sharman Joshi, the third "idiot," has also weighed in on the possibility of a sequel. He expressed hope for a sequel but admitted he hasn't been officially informed of any plans.

Despite the actors' reservations, reports had circulated suggesting that director Rajkumar Hirani was indeed toying with the idea of a sequel and that a script was already in development. Some reports even indicated that the sequel would go on floors in mid-2026, with Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani expected to collaborate again. A source stated the script has been locked, and the team feels the magic of the first film has returned. However, these reports seem to clash with the actors' recent statements.

Released in 2009, "3 Idiots" became a cultural phenomenon, not only in India but also overseas. The film was a box office success, becoming the first Indian film to gross ₹400 crore worldwide. Its enduring popularity stems from its relatable storytelling, humor, and emotional depth, as well as its critique of the Indian education system.

While the possibility of a "3 Idiots" sequel remains uncertain, the original film continues to be cherished for its timeless themes of friendship, ambition, and questioning societal expectations. For now, fans may have to content themselves with re-watching the original and holding onto the hope that a worthy sequel might one day materialize, even if the "idiots" themselves have some doubts.
