Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan conducted a review of the reconstruction efforts in Kedarnath and the progress of the Badrinath master plan. The Chief Secretary's inspection comes as preparations are underway for the upcoming Char Dham Yatra, with a focus on ensuring a smooth and well-managed pilgrimage for devotees.
In Kedarnath, the review encompassed various aspects of the ongoing reconstruction projects. These projects aim to redevelop the Kedarnath temple area, which faced massive devastation during the 2013 floods. The redevelopment plan focuses on creating a wide and clear path to the shrine and constructing structures in small clusters to accommodate residential needs. The first phase of the Kedarnath Dham reconstruction was completed in 2022, with 21 projects worth ₹188 crores underway in the second phase.
Bardhan directed officials to enhance arrangements for the anticipated increase in pilgrims following the commencement of ropeway operations. These preparations include the expansion of the temple complex and the exploration of parking solutions in Gaurikund and Sonprayag. The administration is also working on improving facilities such as darshan tokens, wheelchair access, and signage to ensure a convenient and hassle-free experience for all pilgrims.
In Badrinath, the Chief Secretary assessed the progress of the Badrinath master plan, a project with an estimated cost of Rs 481 crore. The master plan aims to transform the holy town into a smart, sustainable spiritual city. The Badrinath Master Plan spans 85 hectares and is being executed in three phases, designed to meet the expected surge in pilgrims over the next 50 years. Key components of the Badrinath master plan include: * Redevelopment of the mandir complex with improved crowd flow and congestion management * Environmental protection measures and strict enforcement of land-use laws * Seismic safety and climate-sensitive architectural norms suited for the fragile Himalayan ecosystem * Road widening and upgraded pedestrian pathways to improve mobility for visitors * Construction of a riverfront and plaza along the Alaknanda River, creating a serene devotional space
The Prime Minister's Office is actively monitoring progress, while the Chief Secretary and Garhwal Commissioner also conduct regular inspections, reviewing construction quality, unfinished tasks, and the concerns of local residents and stakeholders. Once completed, the Shri Badrinath Dham Master Plan is expected to set a national benchmark for spiritual infrastructure, combining heritage conservation with smart-city principles in a high-altitude environment.
The Char Dham Yatra is a significant pilgrimage in Hinduism, with devotees visiting the Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri temples. The Yatra typically occurs from April/May to October/November. Some devotees undertake a "Do Dham Yatra," focusing on the Kedarnath and Badrinath shrines.
