At the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, Owen Cooper, the 16-year-old star of Netflix's "Adolescence," became the youngest actor to win the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series. Cooper's portrayal of Jamie Miller in the hit series has garnered widespread acclaim, marking a breakout role for the young British actor.
In his acceptance speech, Cooper expressed disbelief and gratitude, stating, "Standing here at the Golden Globes does not feel real whatsoever". He acknowledged the "incredible journey" he and his family have experienced, reflecting on his initial uncertainty about his acting abilities. Cooper recalled taking a risk by attending drama classes, where he was initially embarrassed as the only boy. Despite any initial hesitation, he persevered and emphasized his continuous learning process, drawing inspiration from his peers.
Cooper's win breaks the record previously held by Chris Colfer, who won a Golden Globe at age 20 for "Glee" in 2010. He is also the second-youngest male Golden Globe winner of all time, only beat by Ricky Schroder who won in 1980 at the age of 9 for "The Champ". This victory adds to Cooper's growing list of accolades for his performance in "Adolescence." He previously won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, making him the youngest-ever male acting winner in Emmy history. He has also received a Critics' Choice Award and a Gotham TV Award and has been nominated for a SAG-AFTRA Actor Award.
"Adolescence" has been an awards season favorite, earning five Golden Globe nominations this year. In addition to Cooper's win, the series received nominations for Best Limited Series, Best Actor (Stephen Graham), and Best Supporting Actress (Erin Doherty). Ashley Walters, also from "Adolescence," was nominated in the same category as Cooper. Other nominees included Billy Crudup ("The Morning Show"), Jason Isaacs ("The White Lotus"), Tramell Tillman ("Severance"), and Walton Goggins ("The White Lotus"). At the Emmy Awards, "Adolescence" secured wins for Best Limited Series, Best Actor (Stephen Graham), and Best Supporting Actress (Erin Doherty).
Cooper concluded his Golden Globe speech with a nod to his favorite football team, Liverpool FC, saying, "Bring on 2026. You'll never walk alone," referencing the team's anthem.
