Born on January 4, 1983, in Darjeeling, West Bengal, Prashant Tamang's rise to fame was preceded by a stint with the Kolkata Police, where he joined as a constable after his father's death. He sang in the police orchestra, showcasing his musical talent before auditioning for "Indian Idol 3" on the advice of friends and superiors. His victory on the show sparked celebrations across the Darjeeling hills, Sikkim, and parts of Nepal.
Tamang's win on "Indian Idol" was more than just a personal achievement; it became a unifying moment for the Gorkha community worldwide. According to BJP MP Raju Bista, Tamang's journey created a sense of unity across Darjeeling, Terai, Dooars, Sikkim, and the Northeast, resonating with Gorkhas globally.
