Modi: Government aligned with Netaji's vision for a powerful and self-reliant India on the global stage.

Marking the celebration of Parakram Diwas on January 23, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that his government is diligently following the vision of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in building a strong and self-reliant India. Addressing a program in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands via video conferencing, the Prime Minister emphasized Netaji's dream of a powerful and resolute nation, stating that a weak nation cannot achieve its goals.

Modi highlighted that in the 21st century, India is establishing itself as a powerful nation, capable of managing its strength responsibly. He recalled Operation Sindoor as an example of India's resolve, demonstrating the nation's ability to strike back against those who inflict harm. The Prime Minister underscored the importance of self-reliance in the defense sector, noting the significant progress made in transforming India from a major weapons importer to a defense exporter, with exports crossing ₹23,000 crore. He mentioned the growing global interest in indigenously built systems like the BrahMos missile, emphasizing the modernization of the armed forces through the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative.

PM Modi criticized previous governments for neglecting Netaji's legacy and attempting to confine the freedom movement's legacy to a single family. He accused them of political insecurity and failing to celebrate the nation's history and achievements with pride. According to Modi, these governments sought to attribute the credit for India's freedom solely to one family, resulting in the neglect of the country's rich history.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from Parakram Diwas to strengthen India's resolve towards development, self-reliance, and national strength. He highlighted the significance of January 23rd, emphasizing that Netaji's courage, sacrifice, and vision continue to inspire the nation. He pointed out that the series of national observances between January 23rd and January 30th have evolved into a week-long celebration of the Republic, linking Parakram Diwas, National Voters' Day, Republic Day, Beating Retreat, and the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Prime Minister noted his government has corrected historical injustices by renaming Port Blair as Shri Vijaypuram and other islands as Swaraj Dweep, Shaheed Dweep and Subhash Dweep. Additionally, 21 islands have been named after Param Vir Chakra awardees. These actions symbolize India's commitment to erase the remnants of slavery and assert its identity as a free nation. Modi described Netaji as a visionary of independent India, who envisioned a nation that was modern yet deeply rooted in ancient Indian values, and that the government is committed to familiarizing the younger generation with Netaji's ideals. Initiatives such as the Netaji museum at the Red Fort, the grand statue near India Gate, the inclusion of INA contingents in the Republic Day parade, and the institution of the Subhas Chandra Bose Disaster Management Awards, were mentioned in this context.

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan also highlighted the enduring relevance of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's strategic vision in today's global order. Speaking at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), General Chauhan stated that Netaji's approach to diplomacy, military leadership, and nation-building offers critical lessons for India amidst a complex and uncertain world. He noted Netaji's seamless integration of political vision, diplomacy, and military operations, emphasizing his creation of a government, an army, and his strategic planning and alliance-building.
