Animal soldiers, advanced weaponry, and international guests: India's Republic Day parade to showcase strength and diversity.

India's 77th Republic Day parade on January 26, 2026, is set to be a momentous occasion, blending displays of military might with symbolic gestures of international partnership and a tribute to the unsung heroes of the armed forces: animals. The parade will feature approximately 6,050 military personnel.

For the first time, a meticulously assembled animal contingent from the Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) will participate, showcasing the critical roles animals play in securing India's challenging frontiers. The contingent will include two Bactrian camels, four Zanskar ponies, four raptors, ten indigenous breed Army dogs, and six conventional military dogs. Leading the animal column will be the Bactrian camels, recently inducted for operations in the cold deserts of Ladakh. These camels are uniquely adapted to the extreme conditions of high altitude, thin air, and freezing temperatures, capable of carrying loads up to 250 kilograms across long distances with minimal resources. The Zanskar ponies contribute by transporting essential supplies across terrains inaccessible to vehicles. The Army dogs are experts at detecting explosives, tracking insurgents, and locating survivors in disaster zones. The inclusion of indigenous dog breeds like Rampur Hound, Mudhol Hound, Rajapalayam, Chippiparai, and Kombai highlights India's rich animal heritage.

In a display of military strength, the S-400 air defense system will be showcased for the first time. The S-400 played a crucial role during Operation Sindoor by neutralizing Pakistani fighter jets and reconnaissance aircraft. The Department of Military Affairs will present the "Tri-Services Tableau-Operation Sindoor," highlighting the collaboration between the Army, Navy, and Air Force during the operation. The tableau will showcase India's evolving military doctrine, emphasizing joint operations, precision strikes, and self-reliant defense capabilities. The display will also include indigenous defense systems developed under the "Brand India Defence" initiative.

Adding a global dimension to the celebrations, a contingent from the European Union will participate in the parade, marking a rare international appearance. Top EU leaders, including European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, will attend as chief guests. This participation underscores the deepening strategic partnership between India and the EU, reflecting closer cooperation on trade, technology, climate action, and global security. The EU's presence also aims to finalize the long-awaited India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The Republic Day parade will also commemorate the 150th anniversary of "Vande Mataram," with the theme reflected in cultural performances and tableaux. The parade halls will be named after major Indian rivers, while the Beating the Retreat halls will be named after musical instruments.
