Mumbai Police have detained actor and self-proclaimed film critic Kamaal R Khan, also known as KRK, in connection with a recent incident where four rounds were fired at a residential building in Oshiwara, Andheri. The incident occurred on January 18, 2026.
Following an investigation, the police executed a search operation at Khan's studio where they discovered ballistic materials. Khan was brought in for questioning by the Mumbai Police. During the interrogation, he admitted to firing the shots from his licensed gun. The police have since recovered the firearm.
According to initial reports, no injuries were reported in the incident. However, the discovery of bullets within the residential building has raised concerns. Police officials confirmed that one bullet was found on the second floor and another on the fourth floor of the building. These bullets were later recovered from the residences of Neeraj Kumar Mishra, a writer-director residing on the second floor, and Prateek Baid, a model living on the fourth floor.
Khan has claimed that he did not intend to harm anyone. He stated that he was cleaning his gun and, after cleaning it, fired into a large mangrove forest in front of his house to test its functionality. He added that he believed the area was suitable for such a test. Khan told police that he assumed the bullets would be lost in the mangrove forest, but due to wind, they traveled further and struck the building in Oshiwara.
In an effort to understand the trajectory of the bullets, the police recreated the scene of the firing. This led them to suspect that the shots were fired from Khan's residence. "After recreating the scene, the police allegedly suspected that the bullet was fired from the Kamaal Khan bungalow. We also checked several CCTV cameras of the area, society and bungalow area,” a police source stated.
A senior police officer stated that Khan has not been formally arrested as of January 23, 2026, but he is considered a prime suspect. The investigation is ongoing, and an arrest is likely to occur in the coming hours. The police are treating the incident as a serious breach of public safety.
This is not the first time Khan has been involved in legal trouble. In August 2022, he was arrested for controversial social media posts made in 2020. In September 2022, he was arrested for allegedly demanding sexual favors from an actress in 2019. In December 2023, he was arrested at Mumbai airport in connection with a 2016 case.
