Abhijit Majumdar, a popular Odia singer and music composer, passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at the age of 54. He died while undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar. Majumdar's death has been widely mourned by fans, colleagues, and prominent figures in Odisha.
According to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Majumdar suffered a cardiac arrest around 7:43 am on Sunday. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was immediately initiated, following Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) protocol. Despite all resuscitation efforts, he was clinically declared dead at 9:02 am. Hospital authorities stated that Majumdar had been admitted on September 4, 2025, with hypertension, hypothyroidism, and chronic liver disease. He developed a new onset of fever due to infection on January 23, 2026, which led to refractory septic shock.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his profound grief over the demise of Abhijit Majumdar. In a post on social media platform X, Majhi conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the peace of the departed soul. He described Majumdar's death as an irreparable loss to Odisha's music, cinema, and culture. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also paid tribute to Majumdar, acknowledging his significant contributions to Odia music and his unique musical style that resonated with listeners for decades.
Born on September 11, 1971, Abhijit Majumdar began his career in the Sambalpuri music industry before becoming a prominent figure in Odia cinema. He composed over 700 songs for Odia movies, albums, and Sambalpuri productions. Majumdar was widely regarded as one of the most influential music composers in the Odia film industry, also known as Ollywood. His work includes popular films such as Love Story, Sister Sridevi, Golmaal Love, Mr. Majnu, Sriman Surdas, and Sundergarh Ra Salman Khan.
Majumdar's health had been a concern for several months. He was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar in September 2025 and was under treatment for chronic liver disease, hypertension and hypothyroidism. Although there were signs of improvement in late December 2025, his health deteriorated on Saturday, January 24, 2026, and he was placed on ventilator support after slipping into a coma.
Abhijit Majumdar is survived by his wife, Ranjita Majumdar, and their son. His legacy as a prolific and influential composer and singer in the Odia music industry will endure through his extensive body of work.
