Apple's iPhone sales surge drives record-breaking year in India, marking its strongest performance ever.

Apple has recorded its strongest-ever year in India, driven by a significant surge in iPhone sales throughout 2025. According to Counterpoint Research, Apple's iPhone shipments in India reached approximately 14 million units, capturing a record 9% of the country's smartphone market. This represents a substantial increase from the 7% market share held in 2024, marking the iPhone's best performance in India to date.

The growth in iPhone sales has allowed Apple to expand its presence in the world's second-largest smartphone market. While Apple has seen considerable success, the overall smartphone market in India has remained relatively stagnant, with total shipments holding steady at around 152-153 million units. Despite the flat market, premium phones, those priced above ₹30,000 (approximately $327), experienced a 15% growth during 2025 compared to the previous year. These higher-priced models now account for 23% of all phones shipped, the largest portion ever recorded, a shift that has favored brands like Apple.

Several factors contributed to Apple's impressive performance in India. According to Tarun Pathak, who heads devices and ecosystems research at Counterpoint, these include the company's diverse range of iPhone models, increasing brand recognition with buyers who view the iPhone as a status symbol, and an improved distribution network across various sales channels. Easy financing options, such as no-cost EMIs and bank offers, have also played a role in boosting sales.

Apple's success wasn't limited to iPhones alone. While iPhone shipments grew 24% year-on-year, iPad shipments also saw growth, albeit more modest, at 2%. However, in the fourth quarter of 2025, iPad sales experienced a massive 95% year-on-year increase, indicating a strong end to the year for Apple's tablet lineup.

Within the iPhone lineup, the iPhone 16 series emerged as the most successful, accounting for 57% of total iPhone shipments in 2025 and becoming the best-performing iPhone model of the year. The iPhone 15 series followed with a 24% share, while the newer iPhone 17 series captured 10% of the market. The iPhone 16e also contributed, holding a 6% share. In Q4 2025, the iPhone 16 series maintained its dominance with 50% market share, while the iPhone 17 series gained momentum with 24%.

Recognizing India's growing importance, Apple has been strengthening its presence in the country. CEO Tim Cook stated in October that Apple had achieved an "all-time revenue record in India". CFO Kevan Parekh added that the active iPhone user base in India had reached its highest level ever, with upgrades from older iPhones reaching a quarterly peak. In line with this, Apple has been expanding its retail operations, opening its fifth retail store in India in Noida. Furthermore, Apple is increasing the number of iPhones manufactured within India. Apple also launched Apple Creator Studio in India, which is a subscription bundle including creative software like Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro.

While Apple has made significant strides, it's important to note the competitive landscape. In 2025, Vivo led the Indian smartphone market with a 23% share, followed by Samsung at 15% and Xiaomi at 13%. Despite its record performance, Apple did not crack the top three in terms of overall volume.

Overall, 2025 was a landmark year for Apple in India, characterized by robust iPhone sales, increased market share, and a growing commitment to the Indian market.
