Leicester City Football Club is facing a serious threat of relegation after being handed a six-point deduction for breaching financial regulations. The independent commission's ruling has plunged the Foxes into a precarious position in the Championship standings.
The points deduction sees Leicester City plummet to 20th place in the Championship. They are now level on points with West Bromwich Albion and Blackburn Rovers. The club is only outside the relegation zone by goal difference.
The breach pertains to the English Football League's (EFL) Profit and Sustainability Rules (P&S Rules) during the 2023/24 season. The investigation, initially undertaken by the EFL, was transferred to the Premier League following Leicester City's promotion in 2024. An Arbitration Tribunal in March 2025 confirmed the Premier League's jurisdiction over the matter, leading to the referral of the case to an independent commission in May 2025.
During a week-long hearing in November 2025, Leicester City contested the applicability of the rules and the commission's authority to impose sanctions, including a claim that the rules breached competition law. However, these challenges were ultimately rejected. While the commission accepted certain submissions from the club, including the length of the assessment period and an accounting policy related to player costs, it concluded that Leicester City exceeded the allowable threshold by £20.8 million over the three-year assessment period spanning from 2022 to 2024. The commission also determined that the club's failure to submit its annual accounts to the Premier League by the deadline constituted a rule breach and dismissed the club's claim of exceptional cooperation throughout the proceedings.
Despite these findings, the commission acknowledged Leicester City's improving financial situation as a mitigating factor. The EFL Board has ratified the commission's recommendation for an immediate points deduction, in accordance with EFL regulations, as Leicester City is currently a Championship club.
The immediate impact of the points deduction is a significant blow to Leicester City's campaign. The club now faces a fierce battle to secure their Championship status and avoid relegation. The team will need to demonstrate resilience and determination in the remaining games to overcome this setback.
