Kristen Stewart is considering leaving the United States, citing concerns about the current political climate under President Donald Trump and its impact on the film industry. In a recent interview with The Times UK, the 35-year-old actress expressed her unease, stating that she feels unable to work freely in the U.S..
Stewart, who divides her time between Los Angeles and New York, revealed that she is uncertain about her future in the U.S. and has become increasingly vocal about her concerns. She is not the first celebrity to consider leaving the U.S. during Trump's second term, with others like Ellen DeGeneres and James Cameron having already made similar decisions.
Stewart's directorial debut, The Chronology of Water, was filmed in Latvia, a decision she made because "it would have been impossible to do in the States". She elaborated that the U.S. film industry makes it difficult for young directors to create new works. The film is based on Lydia Yaknovich's memoir and explores themes like childhood abuse and addiction. Stewart feels that the kind of filmmaking she wants to do is becoming harder to support in America.
Adding to her concerns, Stewart criticized Trump's proposal to impose a 100% tariff on films made outside the U.S., calling the idea "terrifying" for the film industry. Although the tariffs have yet to be imposed, the threat itself is a cause for concern. Trump has claimed that the movie-making business has been "stolen" from the U.S., mirroring his stance on other industries.
Stewart stated, "Reality is breaking completely under Trump". However, she added, "But we should take a page out of his book and create the reality we want to live in". While she is considering a move abroad, Stewart doesn't want to give up on the American audience entirely. "I'd like to make movies in Europe and then shove them down the throat of the American people," she said. This statement has drawn some criticism, with some commentators labeling it an "insane anti-Trump rant".
Stewart and Trump have a history of public disagreements. In 2012, Trump publicly criticized Stewart on Twitter for her personal life. In response, Stewart mocked Trump's past tweets about her during a 2017 hosting gig on Saturday Night Live.
Stewart's willingness to work abroad reflects a broader critique of the film industry's structural issues. She has previously described the entertainment industry as a "capitalist hell" that stifles independent expression and diversity. By making films outside Hollywood's traditional system, Stewart aims to embrace a more globally and socio-economically liberal filmmaking landscape.
