In a special session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a vote of confidence, effectively solidifying the new National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government's position. The motion was approved by a voice vote, signaling the formal commencement of the government in the state. The session began with the Governor's address, and the MLAs, some attending via video conferencing, resoundingly supported the Chief Minister.

Despite this political victory for the Khemchand government, tensions remain high, as Kuki Zo communities continue to express their opposition to Kuki MLAs joining the new administration. Community organizations have announced a total shutdown in Kuki Zo inhabited areas. Protests have taken place in Kuki Zo areas, demonstrating against Kuki MLAs participating in the government. Some protests have even reached New Delhi, where Kuki Zo people voiced their discontent. An armed group has reportedly released a video threatening Kuki Zo MLAs, warning them against joining the government.

Nemcha Kipgen, a Kuki Zo MLA, was appointed as one of the Deputy Chief Ministers but took her oath virtually due to security concerns. The Kuki Zo community has been vocal in their demand for a separate administration.

Opposition Congress leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh expressed his hope that the new government would prioritize a return to normalcy and peaceful coexistence in the state. Chief Minister Khemchand responded by expressing gratitude for the opposition's support in restoring peace.

Khemchand acknowledged the presence of Churachandpur MLA LM Khaute and Tipaimukh MLA Ngursanglur Sanate at the swearing-in ceremony, interpreting their attendance as a positive sign for restoring peace and normalcy in Manipur. He emphasized that Manipur is home to 36 different communities and expressed his commitment to working towards the state's progress.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Yumnam Khemchand on taking oath as Chief Minister. Khemchand affirmed his dedication to serving the people of Manipur and contributing to the Prime Minister's vision of a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India) by 2047.

The selection of Yumnam Khemchand as Chief Minister is viewed as a strategic move by the BJP to navigate the ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, which has been ongoing since May 2023. Khemchand's background as a Taekwondo practitioner and his reputation as a consensus-builder are seen as valuable assets in bridging the divide between communities.
