James Rodríguez's MLS Journey: Colombian Superstar Officially Joins Minnesota United, Ushering in a New Chapter.

James Rodríguez, the Colombian national team captain and global superstar, has officially signed with Minnesota United FC. The club made the announcement on Friday, February 6, 2026, confirming the arrival of the 34-year-old midfielder. Rodríguez's contract extends through June 2026, with an option to extend it through December 2026.

Rodríguez joins Minnesota United as a free agent, after his contract with Mexican side Leon was not renewed at the end of 2025. This move to MLS is seen as a strategic decision to boost his chances of participating in the 2026 World Cup. Despite his high profile, Rodríguez will not occupy a Designated Player roster slot.

"I'm very happy for this new chapter in my life," Rodríguez stated. "I hope to be at my best so I can bring joy to this city and to all of the people who are putting their faith in me". He also expressed his eagerness to connect with Minnesota's passionate fanbase, stating, "I'm looking forward to meeting all of the passionate Minnesota fans because I'm also a passionate player who wants to give everything on the field and always wants to win".

Khaled El-Ahmad, Minnesota United's chief soccer officer and sporting director, conveyed his excitement about the new signing. "James is a player whose quality, vision, and experience at the highest levels of the game are unquestioned," El-Ahmad said. He further added, "We're excited to add his creativity and football intelligence to our group. At the same time, this move is about collective strength – not about putting everything on one individual". El-Ahmad believes Rodríguez can significantly contribute to the team's dynamic within their established structure and culture.

James Rodríguez rose to prominence during the 2014 World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot with six goals, leading Colombia to the quarter-finals. This performance led to a high-profile transfer to Real Madrid in July 2014. Throughout his career, Rodríguez has played for major clubs including Bayern Munich, FC Porto, and Everton, amassing 127 goals and 161 assists in 516 club matches. He also won the Golden Ball award for best player at the 2024 Copa America. With 31 goals in 122 appearances, Rodríguez is Colombia's second all-time leading scorer and is expected to captain the national team at the 2026 World Cup.

Minnesota United finished fourth in the Western Conference last year with a 16-8-10 record but were eliminated in the playoff quarter-finals. The team's regular season will commence on February 21 against Austin FC. The club recently underwent a coaching change, with Eric Ramsay departing and assistant Cameron Knowles being promoted to head coach.

Some reports suggest that Rodríguez may consider retirement after the World Cup.
