Pappu Yadav, the independent Member of Parliament from Bihar, was arrested by Patna Police on Friday, February 6, 2026, in connection with a 1995 case. The arrest, which followed a dramatic standoff at his Patna residence, has ignited a storm of controversy, with Yadav claiming political vendetta.

The charges against Yadav stem from a 1995 case filed under the old Indian Penal Code (IPC). He is accused of criminal conspiracy, house-trespassing, cheating, forgery for cheating, and criminal intimidation. The case was filed by Vinod Bihari Lal, who alleged that Yadav fraudulently rented his house in the Gardanibagh area, misrepresenting its intended use as an office. Lal claimed that Yadav concealed the fact that he would use the property as his office when the rental agreement was made.

According to police sources, the MP/MLA court in Patna issued the warrant against Yadav due to his repeated failure to appear in court despite multiple summons. The court had previously issued a non-bailable warrant and even ordered the attachment of his properties.

The arrest unfolded amidst high drama at Yadav's residence in the Mandiri locality. A police team arrived to execute the warrant, leading to a tense situation. Yadav initially resisted, arguing that the police possessed a warrant for property attachment but not for his arrest. Supporters of the MP also gathered at the scene, hindering the police. Medical assistance was arranged before he was formally taken into custody.

Yadav alleges that his arrest is a result of political targeting, claiming it is a consequence of his criticism of the Nitish Kumar-led government and his vocal stance on the government's handling of a recent NEET aspirant's death case. Speaking to reporters after his arrest, Yadav expressed uncertainty about his future, stating, "I don't know what will happen to me."

Patna SP (City) Bhanu Pratap Singh stated that the case was registered at Gardanibagh police station under sections 419, 420, 468, 448, 506 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code. Singh said that the trial was underway, and the MP was required to appear in court, but he failed to do so on the scheduled dates, which led to the court ordering his arrest.

Yadav, who represents the Purnea Lok Sabha constituency, was taken into custody and is expected to be produced before a competent court on Saturday, February 7, 2026. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for the same day. It remains to be seen whether the MP will seek legal relief.
