Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet has decided to transfer the investigation into Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi's alleged links with Pakistan to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The decision, announced on Saturday, February 7, 2026, by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, follows the submission of a report by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) that was probing the matter.
Sarma stated that the decision to hand over the case to the MHA was based on national security concerns, asserting that the issue goes beyond the scope of the state government. He claimed that the case involves three key individuals: Gaurav Gogoi, his British wife Elizabeth Colburn, and a Pakistani national named Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. Sarma has accused Gogoi of having links to Pakistan through his wife and has alleged that she was employed by a Pakistani firm. He also claimed that her salary was linked to Sheikh.
"The Assam government had constituted an SIT to inquire into alleged anti-India conspiracy of Sheikh in connivance with a British citizen and an MP. Keeping in mind the seriousness of the matter, it was decided to hand it over to the MHA,” Sarma said after a cabinet meeting. He added that the SIT report and the case registered on the basis of which the probe was conducted would be forwarded to the MHA, which can then use any of its investigating agencies to take the matter forward.
Sarma has said that the SIT has gathered sensitive material from various sources. However, the team reported that it had reached a point where it could not proceed further without assistance from Interpol and sensitive information from the Government of India and Parliament. "Help from the Interpol is required. Sensitive information from the central government and Parliament is required. As such, it was decided to entrust the case to a central government agency as selected by the MHA," Sarma stated.
The Chief Minister also referenced a past visit by Gogoi to Pakistan when his father, the late Tarun Gogoi, was Chief Minister of Assam, implying that this information was not shared with the central government at the time. He further claimed that Gogoi had "blacked out" of social media during his stay in Pakistan.
Gogoi has dismissed Sarma's allegations as "ridiculous, baseless, insane and nonsense". He has accused Sarma of behaving like an "IT cell troll" and not presenting facts.
Sarma has stated that the investigation is for the sake of national security and that its impact on politics is secondary. He also did not rule out a possible "angle of religious conversion". Sarma said that the Assam government has conducted a good investigation, but it is not enough as foreign nationals are involved. He added that sensitive information and materials have been obtained by the SIT from various sources.
The Chief Minister has been authorized by the cabinet to reveal non-confidential information related to the case at a press conference on Sunday. The Assam government will formally transfer the investigation to the MHA, which will then determine which central agency will take over the case.
