Jammu & Kashmir sees highest volume of mental health support requests via national helpline.

Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has emerged as a leader in addressing mental health concerns, with the highest number of calls per capita to the Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States (Tele-MANAS) helpline in India. This digital initiative provides round-the-clock counselling services, playing a crucial role in a region that has faced decades of conflict, political turmoil, and socio-economic challenges, all of which have significantly impacted the psychological well-being of its residents.

The Tele-MANAS helpline, managed by the Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences Kashmir (IMHANS-K), has become a lifeline for many in J&K. Since its launch in November 2022, the helpline has received over 90,000 distress calls, including over 15,000 calls in 2025 alone, signaling a sharp increase in the demand for mental health support. On average, the center handles nearly 150 calls daily. This surge in calls reflects both a growing awareness of mental health issues and a reduction in the stigma associated with seeking help.

The types of calls received by Tele-MANAS cover a wide spectrum of mental health challenges. These include anxiety, sadness, palpitations, substance abuse, aggression, and suicidal ideation. In many cases, the helpline's timely intervention has proven life-saving. A report by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that Tele-MANAS successfully managed hundreds of self-harm and emergency cases, averting at least 1,916 tragic events. Moreover, the percentage of emergency calls in J&K is significantly higher than the national average, underscoring the severity of mental health issues in the region.

Recognizing the need for accessible and immediate support, J&K has also embraced innovative solutions like the Tele-MANAS chatbot, launched in July 2023. This AI-driven tool provides instant responses to mental health queries, offering round-the-clock assistance and complementing the work of human counselors. Furthermore, in January 2025, IMHANS introduced online video consultations, enhancing the Tele-MANAS platform and providing a mental health OPD experience with prescription generation.

The high prevalence of mental health issues in J&K can be attributed to several factors. The prolonged political instability, conflict, and human rights violations have created a sense of instability, terror, and hopelessness among the population. Studies have shown alarming rates of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Kashmiris. A significant portion of the population has experienced some form of trauma. Socio-economic factors, such as unemployment and poverty, also contribute to the mental health burden.

Despite the challenges, J&K's leadership in mental health helpline calls signifies a positive shift towards addressing the mental health crisis in the region. Tele-MANAS not only provides immediate psychological support and crisis intervention but is also evolving into a comprehensive mental healthcare system integrated with district and community services. This multi-tiered system includes mental health counselors, clinical psychologists, and psychiatrists, ensuring that callers receive appropriate care and guidance. The success of Tele-MANAS in J&K demonstrates the importance of accessible, affordable, and stigma-free mental health support in conflict zones and beyond.
