The recent interaction between former Union Minister Anurag Thakur and students in Himachal Pradesh has ignited a controversy, drawing sharp criticism from opposition parties like the DMK and sparking debate across the political spectrum. During an event on National Space Day at a school in Una, Himachal Pradesh, Thakur posed a question to the students: "Who was the first man to travel to space?". When the students responded with Neil Armstrong, Thakur playfully suggested, "I think it was Hanumanji". This remark, intended or not, has been interpreted as a blurring of the lines between mythology and scientific fact, raising concerns about the message being conveyed to young minds.

The DMK Deputy General Secretary, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, was particularly vocal in her criticism. She stated that such comments are misleading and "a direct affront to scientific knowledge and the spirit of rationality". In a post on X, she emphasized that "Science is not mythology," and that presenting mythology as fact in classrooms could distort children's curiosity and prevent them from distinguishing between historical fact and religious mythology. Kanimozhi stressed that instilling a spirit of inquiry and respect for evidence-based knowledge in young minds is essential for India's future. She also stated that political leaders and public figures have a responsibility to uphold truth and scientific values when addressing students.

Educationists and critics have also weighed in, pointing out that Neil Armstrong's 1969 landing on the moon is a globally recognized scientific milestone. They argue that dismissing such established facts undermines India's scientific credibility, especially at a time when the country is making significant strides in space exploration through ISRO's Chandrayaan and Gaganyaan missions. The incident has also highlighted some educational challenges in India. It revealed that the students were unaware that Yuri Gagarin was the first human to travel to space in 1961. This lack of awareness, coupled with a public figure presenting mythology as history, has been described as a "double rot".

Some observers have pointed out the importance of teaching students to distinguish between fact and fiction while still instilling pride in their history and culture. Mythology can hold cultural and literary value, but it should not be presented as historical truth without evidence. Drawing a line between verified historical events supported by archaeological findings and unverified stories is crucial.

Anurag Thakur's supporters have defended his statement, suggesting that his intention was to encourage independent thinking and decolonize young minds. Thakur himself has urged schools to look beyond textbooks and connect with the nation's heritage, stating that India's cultural history holds lessons that go beyond classroom learning. However, critics argue that this approach should not compromise factual accuracy or scientific understanding.

The controversy has also extended to social media, with many users expressing their opinions on the matter. Some have humorously suggested other mythological figures as potential space travelers, while others have reiterated the importance of evidence-based learning. This incident is not the first time Anurag Thakur has faced criticism for his remarks or actions. Previously, he has been embroiled in controversies related to political ideology and alleged hate speech. Similarly, the DMK has also been at the center of political storms, with leaders like Udhayanidhi Stalin facing backlash for comments on Sanatana Dharma.
