Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed his gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the warm greetings he extended on Ukraine's Independence Day. In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Zelenskyy stated, "Thank you, Prime Minister @narendramodi, for the warm greetings on Ukraine's Independence Day. We appreciate India's dedication to peace and dialogue". He further emphasized the importance of India's role in achieving a lasting resolution to the ongoing conflict with Russia, stating, "Now, as the entire world strives to end this horrible war with dignity and lasting peace, we count on India's contribution. Every decision that strengthens diplomacy leads to better security not only in Europe, but also in the Indo-Pacific and beyond".

Zelenskyy also shared a letter from PM Modi, in which the Prime Minister thanked him for his message and kind wishes on the occasion of India's Independence Day. Modi also extended his greetings to the people of Ukraine on their Independence Day. "I warmly recall my visit to Kyiv in August last year, and note the progress in the India-Ukraine bilateral relations since then. I look forward to working with you to further strengthen our mutually beneficial cooperation," Modi wrote.

PM Modi reiterated India's position of advocating for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict. "India has always stood on the side of peace. India remains committed to extending all possible support for sincere efforts seeking an early, abiding and peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy," he affirmed. He also conveyed his "sincere wishes" for Zelenskyy's well-being and for the prosperity of Ukraine.

These exchanges highlight the ongoing dialogue between India and Ukraine amidst the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine war. India has maintained a largely neutral stance, abstaining from most UN resolutions condemning Russia's actions while emphasizing the need for diplomacy. Despite pressure from Western nations, India has preserved its relationship with Russia, viewing it as a strategically significant partnership. At the same time, Modi has met with Zelenskyy on multiple occasions and India has provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

Ukraine's Ambassador to India, Oleksandr Polishchuk, has confirmed that President Zelenskyy is expected to visit India soon, following an invitation from PM Modi. Kyiv views India as an important partner in peace negotiations, given its ties with Moscow. Polishchuk has urged greater Indian involvement in ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

Analysts suggest that India has carefully positioned itself as a potential peacemaker and facilitator between Russia and Ukraine. To effectively play this role, India may need to broaden its dialogue efforts to address Western concerns as well. India's approach reflects its broader geopolitical balancing act and strategic autonomy.

While India has increased its imports of discounted Russian oil since the conflict began, it has also sent medical supplies, equipment and relief materials to Ukraine as part of its humanitarian response. Despite criticism from some quarters regarding India's continued trade with Russia, Indian officials have maintained that their foreign policy is guided by national interests.

The coming months may see a more active role for India in seeking a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with both sides expressing a desire for stronger ties and greater cooperation.
