Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finnish President Alexander Stubb engaged in a phone conversation on Wednesday, focusing on the Ukraine conflict, India-EU relations, and bilateral cooperation.

Regarding the Ukraine situation, both leaders addressed global efforts to find a resolution and restore stability. President Stubb shared his insights from recent meetings in Washington D.C. with European, U.S., and Ukrainian leaders. PM Modi reiterated India's consistent support for a peaceful resolution and the swift restoration of peace. Both leaders emphasized the need for a just and lasting solution to the conflict, viewing it as a shared global interest.

Strengthening economic ties between India and the European Union was another key topic. President Stubb affirmed Finland's support for the early conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). PM Modi and President Stubb also explored ways to deepen cooperation in key sectors like trade, technology, and sustainability. Areas of particular interest include quantum technologies, 6G, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.

In addition, President Stubb voiced his support for India's AI Impact Summit in 2026. PM Modi extended an invitation to President Stubb to visit India soon. Both leaders committed to staying in close contact on strategic and economic matters.

In related developments, the Free Trade Agreement between India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which includes Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, is set to take effect on October 1. This agreement is projected to create one million direct jobs in India. The Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), signed in March 2024, secures a $100 billion investment commitment from EFTA over 15 years.
