The Delhi government has appointed Advocate Pradeep Rana as the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) to represent the Delhi Police in the case related to the alleged attack on Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The Home Department of the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi issued an official notification authorizing Rana to appear before the courts in connection with the First Information Report (FIR) lodged at the Civil Lines Police Station.

The case stems from an incident that occurred during a public grievance redressal program ("Jan Sunwai") held at Chief Minister Gupta's camp office a few weeks ago. During discussions about the Supreme Court's order regarding stray dogs, a man allegedly attacked the Chief Minister while she was addressing citizens. Following the incident, two individuals were arrested and are currently in judicial custody. The incident occurred on August 20 when Gupta was attacked by a man from Rajkot, Gujarat, during a Jan Sunwai camp at her office on Raj Niwas Marg.

The appointment of Pradeep Rana as SPP was made under the powers conferred by sub-section (8) of Section 18 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The Lieutenant Governor approved the notification, authorizing Rana to represent the Delhi Police effectively in this high-profile matter, ensuring the case is pursued with due diligence and legal expertise.

Following the attack, Chief Minister Gupta held her first Jan Sunwai at her Civil Lines office under heightened security measures. These measures included multiple layers of police personnel, metal detector screenings, CCTV monitoring, and restrictions on mobile phones, cameras, and even spectacles inside the premises.
