Manipur is abuzz with preparations as the state anticipates a visit from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, likely on September 13, 2025. This would be his first visit since ethnic violence erupted between the Meitei and Kuki communities in May 2023.

In Imphal, the capital city, a grand stage is being erected at Kangla Fort, the traditional seat of power for former Manipuri rulers. Arrangements are underway to accommodate over 15,000 people in front of the stage. Cleaning and painting activities are also in full swing within the fort. Materials for the stage construction are being brought in from outside Manipur, and over 100 laborers are involved in the work. Security personnel presence has increased, and visitor identities are being registered.

Road maintenance is also underway. The road medians along the seven-kilometer stretch from Imphal Airport to Kangla Fort are being repainted, and trees are being trimmed. Similar activities are taking place at the Peace Ground in Churachandpur district.

While officials have remained tight-lipped about the specific purpose of the Prime Minister's visit and the construction at Kangla Fort, instructions have been given to complete the tasks as quickly as possible. A BJP leader stated that they have not yet received official information about the visit but are prepared to give Prime Minister Modi a grand reception.

The Prime Minister's expected visit occurs against a backdrop of ongoing ethnic tensions. Since May 2023, clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have resulted in over 260 deaths and displaced thousands. Following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, President's Rule was imposed in the state.

Amid the preparations, two Kuki-Zo organizations, the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and the United People's Front (UPF), recently renewed their Suspension of Operations agreement with the central government. They have committed to upholding Manipur's territorial integrity, relocating camps from sensitive areas, and working towards lasting peace. These groups clarified that the reopening of National Highway 2 should not be interpreted as allowing unrestricted movement between Meitei and Kuki-Zo areas.

Opposition parties have criticized the ruling party for the delay in the Prime Minister's visit given the ongoing tensions. The Prime Minister is also scheduled to visit Assam and Mizoram around the same time.
