Following Karur Incident, Vijay's TVK Announces Smaller, Private Public Gatherings Starting Tomorrow | Inside Look

Following the tragic stampede in Karur on September 27, 2025, which resulted in the loss of at least 41 lives and numerous injuries, Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is set to resume its public engagement with a series of smaller, indoor meetings beginning tomorrow. This marks a shift in strategy for the party, which had suspended its campaign activities in the wake of the Karur incident.

Party sources indicate that the first of these meetings is scheduled to take place in the northern Kancheepuram district. The decision to opt for indoor gatherings reflects a cautious approach, prioritizing safety and crowd management in light of the Karur tragedy. The TVK leadership is keen to avoid a repeat of the circumstances that led to the stampede, where overcrowding and a delayed arrival of Vijay resulted in chaos.

Attendance at these indoor meetings will be limited to individuals who have pre-registered their interest in attending. This controlled access is intended to help maintain order and ensure a secure environment for attendees. Furthermore, Vijay's address at these meetings is expected to be concise, lasting no more than 30 minutes.

The Karur stampede occurred when a massive crowd surged toward Vijay's convoy in Velusamypuram on the Karur-Erode highway, after his arrival was delayed by nearly seven hours. The incident prompted widespread condemnation and led to the establishment of a one-member commission by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to investigate the causes. The state government also announced compensation for the families of the deceased.

In the aftermath, the Tamil Nadu Police accused the TVK leadership of disregarding their advice and failing to implement adequate safety measures. A First Information Report (FIR) was filed, and criminal proceedings were initiated against several TVK leaders, including the general secretary, N. Anand.

Vijay met with victims' families in Mamallapuram in late October to express his condolences. This private meeting was held behind closed doors at a resort, with families transported from Karur to the venue.

Prior to the Karur tragedy, Vijay had been actively campaigning across Tamil Nadu, criticizing the state government for imposing excessive restrictions on his interactions with supporters. He had even suggested that he would seek permission directly from the people to proceed with his rallies.

The decision to resume political activities with smaller, indoor meetings suggests a recalibration of the TVK's campaign strategy. While the party had initially planned a large rally in Salem, the focus has now shifted to a more controlled and safety-conscious approach. The state government has submitted a draft Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to regulate public meetings, and the TVK has pledged to comply with all recommended safety measures. It remains to be seen how these new guidelines will shape the party's future campaign events as it gears up for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly polls.
