Rapper Tory Lanez, real name Daystar Peterson, was reportedly hospitalized on Monday, May 12, 2025, after being stabbed by another inmate at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi. The incident occurred around 7:20 a.m. in a housing unit within the prison. Prison staff immediately responded, providing medical aid and activating 911. Peterson was then transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Conflicting reports initially emerged regarding the severity of Lanez's injuries. While some sources indicated the injuries were non-life-threatening, an Instagram post purportedly from Lanez's account claimed he was stabbed 14 times, including seven wounds to his back, two to the back of his head, and one to his face. The post further stated that he suffered a collapsed lung but was breathing on his own and in good spirits. However, official sources have not confirmed these specific details. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) confirmed that an inmate was injured and taken to an outside hospital but did not disclose the inmate's identity, citing security and privacy policies.
The motivation for the stabbing remains unclear and is under investigation by the California Correctional Institute and the Kern County District Attorney's Office. The Office of the Inspector General has also been notified of the attack. As of now, the identity of the attacker has not been publicly released.
Lanez is currently serving a 10-year sentence for charges stemming from the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. He was convicted in December 2022 on three felony counts: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
The incident comes amidst ongoing legal battles between Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion. Megan recently had her restraining order against Lanez extended to 2030 after alleging that he continues to harass her from prison through third parties. She stated that she fears he may attempt to harm her again, expressing concerns for her safety. Lanez, in response, has accused Megan of "weaponizing the justice system".
Despite his incarceration, Lanez has been working on new music. Just last week, he shared a post on Instagram promoting his upcoming album, reportedly titled "Sl**** Bass," which he claims is "100% recorded, mixed, and mastered". The album is expected to be released this summer.
This is not the first report of increased violence within California prisons. The California Correctional Institution and the Kern County district attorney's office are investigating the incident.
