Bharat Arun's Guidance: Mohammed Siraj Primed to Lead India's Pace Attack With Focus, Discipline

With the highly anticipated five-match Test series between India and England commencing on June 20, 2025, all eyes are on the Indian bowling attack. Former India bowling coach Bharat Arun has voiced his confidence in Mohammed Siraj to step up and lead the pace attack, especially with Jasprit Bumrah's workload being carefully managed due to a prior back injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar series. Arun believes this series presents the perfect opportunity for Siraj to solidify his position as a frontline bowler for India.

Arun, who has closely observed Siraj's development, emphasized the bowler's maturity and readiness to take on greater responsibility. He highlighted Siraj's impressive rhythm, particularly in the recent IPL season, noting that the 31-year-old has learned from his past experiences and is now well-prepared for the challenges ahead.

Siraj has represented India in 36 Tests, securing 100 wickets, including three five-wicket hauls. He has also played in 44 ODIs and 16 T20Is, claiming 71 and 14 wickets respectively. Arun specifically recalled Siraj's outstanding performance during India's memorable victory at Lord's in 2021, where he took four wickets in each innings. This performance, according to Arun, demonstrates Siraj's ability to perform under pressure and deliver match-winning spells.

Arun acknowledged that Bumrah's absence from all five Tests necessitates someone to take charge. He believes that Siraj has the skill set and the mindset to rise to the occasion. He urged Siraj to seize this opportunity to demonstrate his leadership qualities and establish himself as a key figure in the Indian bowling lineup.

While acknowledging the importance of aggression in a fast bowler, Arun also cautioned Siraj about the need to control it. He noted that Siraj is someone who always gives his all and can be a captain's delight. His experience playing under Virat Kohli and with Ravi Shastri as head coach has shaped him into a smart and adaptable bowler.

Looking at other options for the third seamer, Arun expressed his preference for Arshdeep Singh over Prasidh Krishna. He believes Arshdeep's left-arm angle and ability to swing the ball both ways give him an edge, especially considering his prior experience playing county cricket for Kent, which will be valuable in understanding English conditions. While acknowledging Krishna's raw pace, Arun emphasized the importance of adapting quickly to the challenges presented by English pitches and weather. He also highlighted how the Dukes ball, known for its movement and seam, offers an advantage to bowlers who possess the necessary skills.

As India embarks on a new era in Test cricket under the leadership of captain Shubman Gill and a new World Test Championship cycle, the performance of Mohammed Siraj will be crucial. Bharat Arun's backing of Siraj reflects the belief that he has the potential to shine and make a significant impact in the upcoming series against England.
