Bumrah's Absence Noted as Siraj Focuses on Batting During India's Edgbaston Practice

Team India has begun its preparations for the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, following their five-wicket defeat in the first Test at Headingley. However, the team's first practice session at Edgbaston on Friday, June 27, 2025, was notable for the absence of key fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah from on-field activities.

While the rest of the squad engaged in a full-fledged training session, Bumrah's absence has fueled discussions about workload management, especially with a tight schedule between the second Test (July 2-6) and the third Test at Lord's (July 10-14). It is speculated that Bumrah may be rested for the Edgbaston Test, considering he bowled 44 overs in the first match. Coach Gautam Gambhir has previously indicated that Bumrah would likely only play three Tests in the series, with his availability assessed on a game-by-game basis.

Adding to the bowling concerns, Prasidh Krishna was also absent from bowling drills during the practice session. Krishna's absence has led to speculation about potential changes in the bowling lineup for the second Test. Despite taking five wickets in the first Test, Krishna conceded runs at a high economy rate, increasing the likelihood of Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep being considered for the playing XI.

In Bumrah's absence, Mohammed Siraj spent considerable time honing his batting skills. This focus on Siraj's batting comes amid criticism of the Indian tail-enders' sub-par batting abilities. Meanwhile, head coach Gautam Gambhir was seen having extended conversations with pacers Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep, potentially hinting at strategic changes to the bowling attack. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant also had extended batting sessions in the nets.

Despite the scrutiny following the defeat in Leeds, reports suggest a relaxed atmosphere within the Indian camp. On Thursday, the players participated in a team bonding activity at an adventure park in Birmingham. Such activities are seen as vital for fostering team spirit and camaraderie.

The absence of Bumrah from the Edgbaston Test could significantly impact India's bowling strategy, especially considering India's poor record at the ground. His control and impact were sorely missed during crucial overs in the first Test. England capitalized on his absence to secure a five-wicket victory.

Team India's management is approaching the Edgbaston Test with a focus on workload management and long-term player fitness. The decision to potentially rest Bumrah reflects this strategy, even with the series already underway.

The team has been practicing behind closed doors in Birmingham due to security concerns. The team will have a rest day on June 29, with another practice session scheduled at Edgbaston on June 30. The second Test match between India and England will take place at Edgbaston Cricket Ground from July 2-6, 2025.
