Shefali Jariwala, the actress and model who gained immense popularity with the "Kaanta Laga" music video in the early 2000s and later for her participation in Bigg Boss 13, bravely battled epilepsy for 15 years. In a 2021 interview, she opened up about how the condition significantly impacted her career choices after her initial success.
Jariwala revealed that she was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 15. She recounted the challenges she faced, including experiencing seizures in various public settings. "I remember I had tremendous pressure to do well in my studies. Stress and anxiety could lead to seizures," she explained, highlighting the interrelation between mental health and the neurological condition. She further added, "I have got seizures in classroom, during backstage, on roads and somewhere that lowered my self-esteem,".
The unpredictability of the seizures and their potential impact on her self-esteem played a major role in her decision to limit her work after "Kaanta Laga". While the music video catapulted her to instant fame, she found it difficult to fully capitalize on the success due to her health condition. Despite these challenges, she continued to work in the entertainment industry, appearing in films like "Mujhse Shaadi Karogi" and participating in reality shows like "Nach Baliye".
Jariwala was known for her outspoken personality and strong presence on social media. Over the years, she also became an advocate for mental health awareness and women's empowerment. She spoke openly about her struggles with epilepsy, aiming to raise awareness and reduce the stigma associated with the condition. She also revealed that regular exercise helped her remain seizure-free and manage depression.
Shefali Jariwala passed away on June 27, 2025, at the age of 42 due to cardiac arrest. Her sudden demise has been met with shock and sorrow by colleagues and fans.
Before her marriage with Parag Tyagi in 2015, Shefali was married to musician Harmeet Singh of Meet Bros, but they divorced in 2009. She had also dated Siddharth Shukla.
