Australia's captain, Pat Cummins, has etched his name in cricket history during the first Test against the West Indies at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados. Cummins surpassed Richie Benaud's 63-year-old record to become the Australian captain with the most wickets in Test cricket.

Cummins entered the first Test needing two wickets to surpass Benaud's record of 138 wickets. He equaled the record by dismissing Keacy Carty on the first day. On the second day, he claimed the record outright by dismissing West Indies captain Roston Chase. Cummins now has 139 wickets as captain.

With this achievement, Cummins now holds the record for the most wickets taken by an Australian captain in Test cricket, surpassing Richie Benaud (138 wickets), Bob Simpson (41 wickets), Ian Johnson (39 wickets), and Monty Noble (31 wickets). He now stands second in the world for most wickets taken by a captain, only behind Pakistan's Imran Khan who took 187 wickets. Cummins is on track to potentially become the first Test player to take 200 wickets as captain.

Cummins also equaled Imran Khan for the second-most five-wicket hauls by a Test captain, with both sitting at nine. Imran Khan leads with ten. However, Benaud still holds the record for most wickets taken by a spin bowler in this category.

Cummins has captained Australia in 28 Test matches since assuming the role in 2021. In comparison, Benaud captained in 35 matches, and Imran Khan led Pakistan in 48. Under Cummins' leadership, Australia won the 2023 World Test Championship and reached the final again in 2025. He has also overseen Australia's retention of the Ashes and a Border-Gavaskar series win at home.
