Wrexham AFC, co-owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have reportedly made an ambitious approach to sign Danish international Christian Eriksen, who is currently a free agent after his contract with Manchester United expired. The newly-promoted Championship side are looking to bolster their squad as they prepare for their first season in the second tier since 1982.
Eriksen, 33, brings a wealth of experience and quality to the table, having played for top European clubs such as Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, and Brentford, in addition to Manchester United. A league title winner in both the Netherlands and Italy, as well as an English domestic cup winner with Manchester United, Eriksen's potential arrival would be a significant statement of intent for Wrexham.
According to reports, Wrexham have already held talks with Eriksen, with the club's ambitious project and the pitch made by Reynolds and McElhenney impressing the player. However, despite this, Eriksen is said to prefer a move to a top-flight club in Western Europe, as he is determined to compete at the highest level for as long as possible.
Eriksen's agent, Martin Schoots, confirmed Wrexham's interest, stating that the club is "really upgrading everything both on and off the field, and it is a hugely impressive project". Schoots also noted that Eriksen has received approaches from clubs across the world, including Saudi Arabia, the United States, Turkey, and Brazil.
Wrexham have been busy in the transfer market this summer, with manager Phil Parkinson already welcoming six new players to the club. These include Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie, Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward, and Empoli left-back Liberato Cacace. The club have also recently added Bolton captain George Thomason, former Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass, and Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien to their ranks.
The potential signing of Eriksen would be a major coup for Wrexham, demonstrating their ambition to compete with the best in the Championship and push for promotion to the Premier League. However, with Eriksen's preference for top-flight football and interest from other clubs, Wrexham face a battle to secure his signature. While a deal for Eriksen remains unlikely, it is not entirely off the table.
Eriksen made 23 Premier League appearances for Manchester United last season, scoring one goal and recording two assists. He joined United in 2022 on a free transfer and made just over 100 appearances for the club, scoring eight goals and registering 19 assists. He also lifted the Carabao Cup and FA Cup with the Red Devils in 2023 and 2024 respectively.
Wrexham's pursuit of Eriksen highlights their ambition and commitment to building a competitive squad capable of challenging for promotion to the Premier League. Whether they can convince the Danish star to join their project remains to be seen, but their interest in Eriksen is a clear indication of their intent.
