The Indian box office is heating up this week with a diverse range of films hitting theaters, offering something for everyone. From mythological epics to action-packed sequels, here's a look at two of the most anticipated releases: Mahavatar Narsimha and Son of Sardaar 2.
Mahavatar Narsimha, which was released on July 25, 2025, is an animated mythological action film directed by Ashwin Kumar. The film, originally released in Kannada and dubbed in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam, is the first of a planned seven-part animated cinematic universe inspired by the Dashavatara, the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu. The film tells the story of Hiranyakashyap, a demon seeking revenge on Vishnu who declares himself a god. However, Hiranyakashyap's son, Prahlad, remains devoted to Vishnu. Ultimately, Vishnu manifests as Narsimha to defeat the demon and restore balance.
The film has been praised for its storytelling, animation quality, and spiritual themes, making it a surprising success at the box office. Made on a budget of ₹15 crore, Mahavatar Narsimha has grossed ₹112 crore worldwide in its first ten days. Due to the film's continued success in theaters, an OTT release date has not been officially announced, but is expected in late August or early September. The Hindi version is rumored to be released on JioHotstar, while regional versions may be available on other platforms.
Also released August 1st, Son of Sardaar 2 (SOS2) marks Ajay Devgn's return as Jassi in the sequel to the 2012 hit Son of Sardaar. Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, the film is packed with action, humor, and signature Punjabi flair. The cast includes Ajay Devgn, Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishan, Sanjay Mishra, and Vindu Dara Singh. SOS2 faced some challenges leading up to its release. The makers of SOS2 even postponed the release by a week because of the strong performance of Saiyaara, and it will still have to deal with the lingering effects of the film, as well as competition from Mahavatar Narsimha and Dhadak 2. The film is produced by Ajay Devgn, Jyoti Deshpande, N R Pachisia, and Pravin Talreja.
These two films, Mahavatar Narsimha and Son of Sardaar 2, offer different cinematic experiences. This week's releases showcase the variety and vibrancy of Indian cinema, promising a mix of entertainment for moviegoers.
