Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducted a comprehensive review of the law and order situation in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on Thursday, urging top officials to maintain a high state of alert. The meeting, held in New Delhi, comes as winter approaches and mountain passes in the region are expected to become snow-bound, creating potential opportunities for infiltration.
Shah directed security forces to be on "100% alert" against potential attempts by Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK)-based terrorists to exploit the snowfall and cross the border. He emphasized the need for coordinated and vigilant efforts among all security agencies to eliminate terrorism from the region. Shah assured that the central government would continue to provide all necessary resources to support these efforts and insisted that Indian security forces have full freedom of action to crush any threat to peace and security in the region.
The high-level meeting was attended by Lieutenant Governor of J&K, Manoj Sinha, along with the Union Home Secretary, Director of the Intelligence Bureau, Chief of Army Staff, heads of central paramilitary forces, the Chief Secretary, and the Director General of Police (DGP) of J&K. The discussions centered on the overall security scenario, particularly in light of the terror attack in Pahalgam that occurred on April 22. The attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people, including 25 tourists from various parts of India, prompted retaliatory strikes by Indian forces as part of Operation Sindoor. This operation targeted and destroyed terror hubs and inflicted heavy damage on military facilities in Pakistan after Pakistani forces attempted to target civilian and security facilities in India.
Shah commended the J&K administration and security agencies for strengthening the security grid following the Pahalgam attack. He praised the steps taken to cripple the terrorist network in the region, which he attributed to the sustained efforts of the security agencies. The Home Minister also cautioned security personnel against potential attempts by foreign terrorists to take advantage of the snow to infiltrate into J&K.
In addition to security matters, the meeting addressed the rehabilitation of flood-hit areas and the progress of central projects in J&K. Discussions covered key issues such as coordination between central and Union Territory agencies to ensure the smooth execution of central initiatives.
The Home Minister is expected to seek detailed updates on security, flood rehabilitation, infrastructure rebuilding, and coordination between civil and security departments to ensure the smooth execution of Central initiatives in Jammu and Kashmir.
