Swansea City has appointed Vítor Matos, formerly an elite development coach at Liverpool, as their new head coach on a four-year contract. The 37-year-old Portuguese coach arrives from Marítimo, a second-tier Portuguese club, where he recently began his first senior managerial role in June. Matos, a disciple of Jürgen Klopp, was an integral part of Liverpool's backroom staff, joining the Reds in October 2019.
The Championship club was in search of a new head coach after dismissing Alan Sheehan on November 11, after only six months in charge. Sheehan's tenure concluded with a record of four wins out of 15 Championship matches, leaving Swansea in 18th position, just seven points above the relegation zone. Following Sheehan's dismissal, former assistant boss Darren O'Dea was in temporary charge.
Swansea City Chief Executive Tom Gorringe stated that Matos was the clear stand-out candidate from a range of individuals interviewed, with "a cohesive plan of how to take our squad forward". Gorringe further commented on Matos's decade-long experience at elite clubs and his role as a trusted figure for some of the best coaches in the game. He also highlighted Matos's commitment to attacking football and developing players technically and tactically.
Marítimo confirmed that Swansea City agreed to pay the €1 million (£880,000) release clause to secure Matos's services. The Portuguese club expressed gratitude for Matos's professionalism, dedication, and contribution during his time there.
Club legend Leon Britton has joined the coaching team on a short-term basis, while Joe Allen will also assist with the transition. However, Darren O'Dea, who was in temporary charge, along with fellow coach Richard Stearman, will depart from Swansea following Matos's appointment.
Matos watched Swansea's 3-0 defeat against Bristol City from the stands. The defeat left them in 20th position in the league table. Matos will be in charge for the match against Derby County.
