Rangers face significant overhaul: Two key executives depart, signaling a major organizational restructuring.

Rangers Football Club is set for a significant restructuring following the announcement of the immediate departures of Chief Executive Patrick Stewart and Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell. The decision, revealed on Monday, November 24, 2025, comes after a disappointing start to the season, marked by poor league performance and a string of consecutive European defeats.

The club's American owners, led by Chairman Andrew Cavenagh, are spearheading the changes as part of a strategic move to install new leadership that aligns with their vision for the club's future. Cavenagh stated that the departures of Stewart and Thelwell are a result of the ownership group's assessment since their summer takeover. He emphasized a commitment to "responsible change" and highlighted the priority of improving sporting performance.

The shaky start to the season, both domestically and in Europe, has triggered angry reactions from fans, who have directed their frustration toward Thelwell and Stewart. This occurred even after Danny Rohl replaced Russell Martin as manager. The pressure has been mounting on the club to make the right decisions following a turbulent beginning to the new ownership's tenure. Rangers are currently fourth in the Premiership and at the bottom of their Europa League group.

The exits of Stewart and Thelwell come shortly after the dismissal of manager Russell Martin, further underscoring the sweeping changes taking place at the club. While domestic form has improved since Danny Rohl took the helm, the American owners have acted decisively to remove both Stewart and Thelwell to steer the club back on track.

A key point of contention has been the summer recruitment strategy, which has been heavily criticized. Thelwell's appointment of his son, Robbie, as head of recruitment also caused an uproar. Despite the controversy, Robbie Thelwell will remain in his position, along with Dan Purdy, the technical director, and Nathan Fisher, the head of scouting, both of whom previously worked with Kevin Thelwell at Everton. They are now tasked with supporting Rohl as he prepares for the January transfer window.

Rangers made 14 signings during the summer transfer window, 12 of whom were recruited by Thelwell, including five loan signings. This included £8 million spent on striker Youssef Chermiti, who has only scored four top flight goals in his career.

Fraser Thornton, a current director, will step in as acting CEO while the club searches for a permanent replacement for Stewart. The club has reassured fans of their continued support for manager Rohl.

The new ownership consortium, led by Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, acquired a majority stake in the club in May 2025. The group has pledged to invest £20 million into the club, pending shareholder approval. Cavenagh will serve as Chairman of the Board, working closely with Paraag Marathe, who is also the President of 49ers Enterprises and Chairman of Leeds United.

The changes reflect a bold new direction for Rangers as they strive to re-establish themselves at the pinnacle of Scottish football and achieve success in European competitions.
