External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is actively working to strengthen India's partnership with Bahrain, emphasizing the longstanding and multifaceted nature of the relationship. In recent discussions with his Bahraini counterpart, Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, both ministers explored avenues to deepen cooperation across various sectors and exchanged views on regional and global developments.

Jaishankar, currently in New York, conveyed his sentiments in a social media post, stating, "Good to speak with FM Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani of Bahrain over the phone". He highlighted the discussions centered around strengthening the existing partnership and addressing current regional and global issues.

Earlier this month in New Delhi, Jaishankar and Al Zayani engaged in extensive talks, during which they announced the commencement of negotiations for an ambitious trade deal and moved closer to finalizing an investment pact. Furthermore, they agreed to develop a common understanding to begin negotiations for a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA). Officials believe that a DTAA would eliminate double taxation, provide tax certainty, and promote trade and investment between the two countries.

India considers Bahrain an important country in West Asia, with bilateral relations experiencing significant growth in recent years. Two-way trade reached USD 1.64 billion in 2024-25, underscoring the strengthening economic ties. Bahrain is also home to approximately 332,000 Indian nationals, comprising nearly a quarter of the country's total population of 1.5 million, further solidifying the relationship. India ranks among Bahrain's top five trading partners.

During the 5th India-Bahrain High Joint Commission meeting in New Delhi, Jaishankar and Al Zayani highlighted the centuries-old friendship between the two nations, rooted in trade and strong people-to-people connections. Both countries share a commitment to promoting peace and prosperity.

Jaishankar also acknowledged India's active participation in the Combined Maritime Forces based in Manama, Bahrain. In September 2025, three Indian naval ships visited Bahrain, reinforcing bilateral friendship and the Indian Navy's dedication to regional maritime security.

India and Bahrain have witnessed consistent growth in bilateral trade and investment. Jaishankar has extended an invitation to Bahraini investors to explore opportunities in India, emphasizing that the conclusion of a Bilateral Investment Treaty and the establishment of a Joint Working Group on Trade and Investment will further enhance economic ties. The countries are also collaborating in healthcare, with progress being made in cooperation between their space agencies. Additionally, India has launched an electronic visa system for Bahraini nationals to encourage more visitors.
