Kumail Nanjiani's Reverence: Calling Shah Rukh Khan 'God' Reflects the Bollywood Icon's Global Influence.

Pakistani-American actor Kumail Nanjiani has declared Shah Rukh Khan to be a "God," not just a movie star, sparking a widespread discussion about the Bollywood icon's global influence and unique appeal.

Nanjiani's comments came during a conversation with Hasan Minhaj on Minhaj's YouTube channel. The two comedians were discussing Indian cinema and Shah Rukh Khan's impact when Minhaj posed the question of who is a bigger movie star, Shah Rukh Khan or Tom Cruise. Nanjiani's response was emphatic: "Shah Rukh Khan is a God. He is not a movie star". He explained that comparing the two is like "comparing apples to oranges".

Nanjiani elaborated on his view, emphasizing the cultural significance of movies in India, stating that movies are integral to Indian culture and movie stars are revered as gods and kings. He highlighted the immersive experience of watching Bollywood films, noting that a five-hour movie is an all-day event. He contrasted this with the American movie culture, suggesting that America has never had the same level of reverence for its movies. Nanjiani also touched upon the comprehensive entertainment package that Bollywood movies offer, including action, drama, romance, comedy, and songs.

Nanjiani further pointed out Shah Rukh Khan's humility, contrasting it with Tom Cruise's classic movie star persona. He observed that while Cruise presents himself with "movie star shades," Shah Rukh Khan often downplays his stardom, saying things like "Oh! I'm nothing". Nanjiani believes that this humility, combined with Khan's obvious confidence, sets him apart. Minhaj connected this humility to the Urdu culture, where it is highly valued even among those at the top.

Nanjiani also lauded Shah Rukh Khan's versatility as an actor, noting that he was one of the first leading men in Bollywood to take on complicated, villainous roles. He specifically mentioned films like "Darr," where Khan played an anti-hero, showcasing his willingness to take risks and play darker characters. Nanjiani and Minhaj agreed that "Darr" was exceptional.

Shah Rukh Khan has been a dominant figure in Bollywood for over three decades, appearing in more than 100 films. His global fan following and ability to connect with audiences have solidified his status as a legend in Indian cinema. Nanjiani's recent comments only amplify the widely held perception of Khan's unique position in the entertainment world.

This isn't the first time Nanjiani has expressed his admiration for Bollywood and Shah Rukh Khan. In the past, he has mentioned Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan as his favorite stars, further cementing his appreciation for Indian cinema.
