Agartala, December 26, 2025 – Biswa Bandhu Sen, the Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly and a four-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), has passed away at the age of 72. Sen, who had been receiving medical treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru for several months, died on Friday. Officials in Agartala confirmed that he suffered a massive cerebral stroke.
Born on May 23, 1953, Biswa Bandhu Sen completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from Maharaja Bir Bikram College, Agartala, in 1975. He began his political career with the Indian National Congress, winning his first MLA seat in 2008 from the Dharmanagar constituency in North Tripura. He secured a second term in 2013, also representing Congress. In 2017, Sen joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and went on to win the Dharmanagar seat again in 2018 and subsequently in 2023. He served as the Deputy Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly from 2018 to 2023 before being elected as the Speaker on March 24, 2023.
News of his passing has prompted widespread শোক and tributes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on X, acknowledging Sen's dedication to Tripura's advancement and his commitment to social welfare. "Pained by the passing of Shri Biswa Bandhu Sen Ji, Speaker of the Tripura Assembly. He will be remembered for his efforts to boost Tripura's progress and commitment to numerous social causes. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti," the Prime Minister stated.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha conveyed his deep shock and offered condolences to Sen's family and followers on Facebook, recognizing the Speaker's death as an "irreparable loss" for the state.
As a mark of respect, the Tripura government has declared a three-day state mourning period commencing Friday. All government offices, institutions, schools, colleges, and other educational institutions in the state remained closed on Friday. Sen's body is expected to be brought back to Tripura on Saturday. A state funeral will be held for the departed leader.
Biswa Bandhu Sen is survived by his wife, one son, and one daughter. His contributions to Tripura's political landscape and his long-standing service to the Dharmanagar constituency will be remembered by many.
