In a candid interview, Naveen Kaushik, the actor known for his role as Donga in the blockbuster spy thriller Dhurandhar, revealed that he was on the verge of quitting acting before landing the part. Kaushik, who has been working in the film industry for over 15 years, described this role as his "last Hail Mary," a final attempt to reinvent himself and reconnect with audiences.

Kaushik's journey in Bollywood began in 2008 with Dev D, followed by a role in the critically acclaimed Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year (2009), where he played Nitin Rathore, the strict boss of Ranbir Kapoor’s character. He also appeared in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani as a trip guide. Despite these roles and appearances in movies like Bank Chor and Guest in London, Kaushik felt he was becoming typecast and yearned for a role that would showcase his versatility.

"After Rocket Singh, people started seeing me only as an authority figure, an office boss," Kaushik explained. This realization, coupled with the inherent challenges of the industry, led him to a point where he seriously considered leaving acting altogether.

Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar and released on December 5, 2025, proved to be the turning point Kaushik desperately needed. The film, set against the backdrop of Karachi, Pakistan, features a stellar cast including Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, and Arjun Rampal. Kaushik's portrayal of Donga, a "rough and tough but cheerful" gang member, resonated with audiences.

The actor also manages Improv Comedy Mumbai (ICM), an improvisational teaching and performance college in India. He has performed, taught, and represented India at international improv festivals around Europe and North America as a member of India's top improv team.

Kaushik expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of Dhurandhar, acknowledging the overwhelming love he has received from the audience. He noted that one of the most rewarding aspects of the film's success is the recognition and appreciation from viewers, something he had longed for since moving to Mumbai. He felt blessed and grateful to have the opportunity to reinvent himself and reintroduce himself to the audience.

Notably, Dhurandhar has also garnered attention and appreciation from audiences in Pakistan. Kaushik, in an interview with Live Hindustan, shared that viewers from across the border have lauded the film for its respectful portrayal of their culture, avoiding stereotypes and instead focusing on exposing corrupt elements within the system.

Addressing recent criticism of Dhurandhar as a "propaganda movie" by YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, Kaushik defended the film, stating that Rathee was exploiting the film's popularity for his own gain. Director Aditya Dhar has indirectly responded to these criticisms, emphasizing the organic success of the film and its relevance to contemporary Indian cinema.

With Dhurandhar approaching ₹900 crore at the box office and a sequel slated for release on March 19, 2026, Naveen Kaushik's career has been revitalized. What seemed like a final attempt has blossomed into a new chapter filled with promise, proving that perseverance and the right opportunity can make all the difference.
