Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh ignited a political debate on Saturday, December 27, 2025, after praising the organizational strength of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ideological parent, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). His remarks, initially made in an online post, triggered a wave of reactions, both within and outside the Congress party.
Singh's post on X (formerly Twitter) featured an old photograph of a young Narendra Modi sitting on the floor near BJP leader L.K. Advani. Singh highlighted the ability of grassroots workers in the BJP and RSS to rise through the ranks to become Chief Ministers and even the Prime Minister. He described this phenomenon as "the power of the organisation," concluding his post with "Jai Siya Ram". Singh stated he found the picture on Quora.
The timing of Singh's comments, just ahead of a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, led to speculation that he was subtly signaling the need for internal reforms within the Congress party. It also followed his recent open call to Rahul Gandhi for "pragmatic decentralised functioning" within the Congress. Singh tagged top Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in his post, further fueling this interpretation.
The BJP quickly seized on Singh's comments to attack the Congress. BJP spokesperson C.R. Kesavan described Singh's remarks as a "truth bomb," alleging they exposed the autocratic functioning of the Congress party and questioning whether Rahul Gandhi would respond.
Faced with mounting criticism, Singh clarified his position, asserting that he remains a staunch opponent of the RSS ideology and Prime Minister Modi. He emphasized that his praise was solely directed at the organizational capabilities of the BJP and RSS. Speaking to the media after the CWC meeting, Singh stated that he had only praised the organisation and reiterated his opposition to the RSS and Modi's policies. He also downplayed suggestions that his post was intended as advice to the Congress leadership.
Singh's clarification did little to quell the controversy. Within Congress circles, his post was widely interpreted as a message to the party high command regarding the need for organizational reform. Some observers believe that Singh's remarks reflect his concerns about the party's structure and its ability to convert movements into votes. Singh himself has acknowledged weaknesses within the Congress's structure. He has also called for the party to strengthen its organization and adopt a more decentralized approach.
Adding another layer to the situation, Singh's second Rajya Sabha term is set to end early next year, and his chances of securing a third term are uncertain. This has led to speculation that his recent actions may be aimed at highlighting his relevance within the party.
Despite the controversy, Singh has remained firm in his stance, reiterating his admiration for the RSS's ability to build a strong organization, even though it is an unregistered entity. He also pointed out the RSS's effectiveness in reaching people and promoting their agenda.
