New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the performance of India's cricketers and para-athletes, declaring 2025 a "memorable year in sports" for the nation. This recognition comes in the wake of significant achievements on both the cricket field and in para-athletics, marking a year of progress and inspiration.
In cricket, 2025 was a year of mixed fortunes but also of significant triumphs. The Indian men's cricket team secured the ICC Champions Trophy, defeating New Zealand in the final, and also clinched the Asia Cup, where they beat Pakistan. However, the team faced challenges in Test cricket, including a series defeat to South Africa. Despite these setbacks, there were notable performances, particularly in the T20I format, where India won 15 out of 21 matches. Abhishek Sharma stood out with a remarkable 135 off 54 balls against England, the highest score by an Indian batter in T20Is. Other impressive performances included Tilak Varma's unbeaten 69 against Pakistan in the Asia Cup final and Hardik Pandya's explosive 63 off 25 balls against South Africa.
The Indian women's cricket team had a record breaking year as they won the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup for the first time.
Para-athletes also made the nation proud with their performance at the World Para Athletics Championships held in New Delhi. India finished 10th in the standings with a record 22 medals, including 6 gold, 9 silver, and 7 bronze. This was India's best-ever performance at the championships, surpassing their previous record of 17 medals in 2024. Sumit Antil won his third world championship gold medal, becoming the most decorated Indian para-athlete. Shailesh Kumar clinched a gold medal in the men's high jump, while Rinku Hooda and Sundar Singh Gurjar won gold and silver, respectively, in the men's javelin throw.
PM Modi acknowledged the para-athletes' role in strengthening India's identity as a rising sporting hub. He highlighted their resilience and determination, which have inspired sportspersons and individuals across the world. Hosting the World Para Athletics Championships in Delhi was an honor for India, showcasing the nation's commitment to inclusivity and sports.
The Prime Minister has consistently promoted sports through initiatives like Khelo India, aiming to identify and nurture young talents. He has also praised the younger generation for their potential to contribute to India's development, envisioning a "Viksit Bharat" by 2047. The achievements of both the cricketers and para-athletes in 2025 reflect the growing depth, confidence, and ambition within India's sporting culture, marking a significant chapter in the nation's sporting journey.
