Rahul Gandhi Highlights Indore Deaths: Allegedly Poison, Not Water, Being Distributed to Victims

On Friday, January 2, 2026, Rahul Gandhi strongly criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Madhya Pradesh government following the deaths of at least ten people in Indore due to contaminated drinking water. Gandhi described the situation as the distribution of "poison" rather than water, highlighting the administration's negligence.

The crisis unfolded in Indore, which has been recognized multiple times as one of India's cleanest cities. However, the recent incident has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about the state government's accountability. Gandhi accused the BJP's "double-engine" government, referring to the party being in power both at the state and central levels, of failing to protect the basic right to clean water.

"In Indore, there was no water—just poison being distributed, while the administration slumbered like Kumbhakarna," Gandhi stated, referencing a mythological character known for sleeping for extended periods. He further added, "Mourning has spread from home to home, the poor are helpless—and to top it off, arrogant statements from BJP leaders. Those whose hearths have gone cold needed solace; the government served up hubris instead".

Gandhi highlighted that residents had repeatedly complained about the dirty and foul-smelling water, yet their concerns were ignored. He questioned how sewage was allowed to mix with the drinking water supply, why the supply wasn't shut off promptly, and when action would be taken against the responsible officers and leaders. "These aren't trivial questions — they demand accountability," he asserted.

The Congress leader also linked the Indore incident to other governance failures in Madhya Pradesh, such as deaths linked to contaminated cough syrup and reports of children dying due to rats in government hospitals. He claimed that Madhya Pradesh has become an "epicentre of misgovernance," and criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on these issues, especially when the poor are affected.

The water contamination incident has sparked fear among residents, particularly in areas like Bhagirathpura, with many afraid to consume even the water supplied by tankers. The incident has led to a public health crisis, with hundreds falling ill due to diarrhea and vomiting, prompting urgent medical intervention and preventive measures.

RJD MP Manoj Jha echoed Gandhi's criticism, further amplifying the condemnation of the government's handling of the situation. The incident continues to unfold, with investigations and public outcry demanding answers and accountability from those in power.
