Ryan Hurst, known for his roles in "Sons of Anarchy" and "The Walking Dead," has been cast as Kratos in Prime Video's live-action "God of War" series. This marks a return to the "God of War" universe for Hurst, who previously voiced Thor in the 2022 game "God of War Ragnarök". The series will adapt the Norse era of the franchise, focusing on the relationship between Kratos and his son, Atreus, mirroring the narrative of the 2018 "God of War" game.
The show will follow Kratos and Atreus as they journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Kratos will grapple with teaching Atreus how to be a god, while Atreus attempts to show Kratos how to be human.
Ronald D. Moore ("Battlestar Galactica," "Outlander") is the showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Frederick E.O. Toye ("The Boys," "Shōgun") will direct the first two episodes. Production is underway in Vancouver, with a two-season order already secured.
The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis serve as co-executive producers.
Hurst's casting has been met with praise from fans, particularly because of his prior involvement in the "God of War" franchise. The series will explore Kratos' efforts to adapt to fatherhood while dealing with his past. The official character description released by Amazon highlights Kratos' origins as a Spartan warrior who made a deal with Ares, the Greek God of War, losing his soul in the process.
Other cast members have not yet been announced. However, rumors suggest Ólafur Darri Ólafsson ("Severance") may play Thor and Max Parker ("Boots") could be Baldur. There is also speculation regarding Deborah Ann Woll ("Daredevil"), who's likeness was used for Kratos' wife in the game, reprising her role.
The "God of War" series joins other video game adaptations on Amazon Prime, such as "Like a Dragon: Yakuza" and "Fallout".
