The Union Budget 2026 has been hailed as a potential "gamechanger" for Indian astronomy, with significant allocations towards establishing and upgrading key facilities dedicated to space science and research. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the budget, emphasizing the government's commitment to promoting astrophysics and astronomy through immersive experiences.

A key highlight of the budget is the proposal to set up and upgrade four telescope infrastructure facilities. These include:

  • National Large Solar Telescope (NLST): This telescope will enable detailed observations of the Sun, helping scientists to better understand solar activity, magnetic fields, and space weather events. These events can have a significant impact on satellites, communication systems, and power networks on Earth.
  • National Large Optical Infrared Telescope (NLOT): This telescope will allow astronomers to study distant and faint objects, such as galaxies, nebulae, and exoplanets. By working in both optical and infrared wavelengths, it will support advanced research in cosmology and stellar evolution.
  • Himalayan Chandra Telescope: Located in Ladakh, this telescope will undergo upgrades to enhance its capabilities. The high altitude and clear skies of Ladakh make it an ideal location for astronomical observations.
  • COSMOS-2 Planetarium: This planetarium will also be upgraded, likely to enhance its immersive and educational capabilities, bringing the wonders of the universe closer to students and the public.

These initiatives are expected to significantly boost India's scientific capabilities in astrophysics and astronomy. The move aims to encourage innovation and inspire young researchers to pursue space science. Lt. Gen. AK Bhatt (retd.), Director General, Indian Space Association (ISpA), expressed hope for a more investment-friendly environment for science and technology, encouraging private sector participation. He added that the expansion of telescope infrastructure and learning facilities is a meaningful step towards strengthening India's scientific base in astrophysics and astronomy. These measures can improve observational capabilities, enable long-term research, and strengthen collaboration between ISRO, academia, and industry, gradually enhancing India's contribution to global space science and the broader space ecosystem.

While the space sector witnessed a modest 2% increase in the budget, the focus on upgrading and establishing these key astronomical facilities signals a strong commitment to advancing India's capabilities in this field. Experts suggest that larger outlays may be required in the coming years if India is to match its global aspirations with financial muscle, especially as space becomes central to national security, science, and economic growth.

In addition to the investment in astronomy, the Union Budget 2026 also proposes to develop 15 archaeological sites into "vibrant, experiential cultural destinations". This includes curated walkways, immersive storytelling, and technologies to help conservation labs, interpretation centers, and guides. This initiative aligns with the focus on promoting immersive experiences and leveraging technology to enhance understanding and appreciation of India's rich heritage. The Finance Minister also highlighted plans to support the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies, Mumbai, in setting up Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) Content Creator Labs in numerous schools and colleges nationwide.

Overall, the Union Budget 2026 demonstrates a multi-faceted approach to bolstering India's scientific and cultural landscape, with a clear emphasis on investing in the future through education, research, and immersive experiences. The allocation towards astronomy is particularly noteworthy, signaling a new era of discovery and innovation in the field.
