The Parliament witnessed a tumultuous day marked by a heated exchange between Rahul Gandhi and Ravneet Singh Bittu, protests, and subsequent adjournments on February 4, 2026. The disruptions began with Opposition MPs protesting the suspension of eight of their colleagues, leading to a chaotic atmosphere that Speaker Om Birla struggled to control.

The day's events were further inflamed by a verbal spat between Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu outside Parliament. The confrontation occurred near the Makar Dwar, where Congress MPs were staging a protest. Gandhi, referring to Bittu's defection from Congress to the BJP, called him a "traitor," adding sarcastically that Bittu would eventually return to the Congress party. Bittu, who served as the leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha in 2021 before joining BJP in 2024, retorted by calling Gandhi an "enemy of the country". He also accused the Gandhi family of being "murderers of Sikhs," refusing to shake hands with Rahul.

Inside the Lok Sabha, the Opposition's protests continued, demanding that Rahul Gandhi be allowed to speak. The unrest stemmed from an incident on Monday when Gandhi was prevented from quoting an article referencing an unpublished memoir by former Army Chief M.M. Naravane regarding the 2020 India-China conflict. The Chair's decision to bar Gandhi from speaking on the issue of national security and the subsequent suspension of eight MPs for "misconduct" and "utter disregard to the House" fueled the Opposition's outrage. The suspended MPs included Hibi Eden, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Prashant Yadaorao Padole, Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, Dean Kuriakose (all from Congress), and S Venkatesan from CPI(M).

As the Opposition's uproar continued, Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House multiple times. Despite attempts to conduct a brief Question Hour, the persistent disruptions forced the Speaker to adjourn the House first until noon, then to 2 PM, and again to 5 PM, before finally adjourning it for the day. The disruptions reached a climax when Opposition MPs stormed the Treasury benches and "gheraoed" the Prime Minister's seat, leading to the House being adjourned before Prime Minister Narendra Modi could address it. Visuals from inside the Parliament showed MPs crossing over barricades near the Speaker's Chair to reach the Prime Minister's seat. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari alleged that the opposition surrounded PM's chair and wanted to attack him.

The series of disruptions and adjournments effectively stalled parliamentary proceedings, including a debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President's Address. Despite the chaos, Union Minister Piyush Goyal addressed the Lok Sabha regarding the India-U.S. trade deal, emphasizing the protection of sensitive sectors like agriculture and dairy. He also spoke in the Rajya Sabha, highlighting the long-term national interest served by the trade agreement.

The day's events underscore the heightened political tensions and the continued standoff between the government and the opposition during the Budget Session. With the Lok Sabha adjourned, it remains to be seen how these issues will be addressed in the coming days.
