Former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has vacated his official residence in the Vice-President's Enclave and has moved to a farmhouse owned by Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Abhay Chautala in Chhatarpur, South Delhi. This move comes more than a month after Dhankhar's resignation from his post on July 21, citing health reasons. He had been staying at the Vice-President's Enclave near Parliament House until recently.

Dhankhar's stay at Chautala's farmhouse is a temporary arrangement. He has been allotted a Type-8 bungalow, which is the largest category of official residences, on A.P.J Abdul Kalam Road. However, the bungalow is currently undergoing repairs and renovations by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), which are expected to take around three months.

In the interim, Abhay Chautala offered Dhankhar his farmhouse in Gadaipur, Chhatarpur, as a place to reside. Chautala affirmed that Dhankhar is welcome to stay at the farmhouse for as long as he wishes, emphasizing their close ties. Dhankhar did not request accommodation from Chautala; the offer was extended to him.

The relationship between Dhankhar and the Chautala family spans nearly four decades. Abhay Chautala's grandfather, Devi Lal, a former Deputy Prime Minister, is considered Dhankhar's political mentor. Devi Lal played a crucial role in Dhankhar's entry into politics, offering him a Janata Dal ticket to contest the 1989 Lok Sabha elections from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. He also inducted Dhankhar into the council of Ministers, appointing him as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs. Dhankhar has always referred to Devi Lal as his "mentor".

Dhankhar's decision to resign as Vice President on July 21, the first day of the Parliament's Monsoon Session, came as a surprise. He cited health reasons for his resignation, which was submitted to President Droupadi Murmu. His term was originally set to end on August 10, 2027.

With Dhankhar's resignation, an election is scheduled for September 9 to choose his successor. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has nominated the Governor of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu BJP leader C.P. Radhakrishnan, while the opposition has nominated former Supreme Court judge Justice B. Sudershan Reddy.

In addition to the government bungalow, Dhankhar has also applied to resume his pension as a former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Rajasthan. He served as an MLA from the Kishangarh assembly seat from 1993 to 1998 and received a pension until July 2019, when he became the Governor of West Bengal. He is now entitled to a pension of Rs 42,000 per month as a former legislator. As a one-term MP, he is also entitled to an additional ₹45,000 per month, along with other standard post-retirement benefits.

While awaiting the completion of renovations on his allotted government bungalow, Dhankhar will reside at Abhay Chautala's farmhouse, a testament to their long-standing political and personal relationship.
