The Supreme Court of India has declined to urgently hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to cancel the highly anticipated India vs Pakistan match in the Asia Cup 2025. The match is scheduled to take place on September 14 in Dubai.

The PIL was filed by four law students. They argued that holding the cricket match so soon after the Pahalgam terror attack was against the nation's interest. The petitioners contended that it would belittle the sacrifices of soldiers and civilians who lost their lives. The April 22 attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Baisaran Valley resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians and prompted India to launch Operation Sindoor to target terrorist infrastructure across the border. The petitioners stated that playing cricket with Pakistan would convey the message that India is celebrating sports with a country that shelters terrorists while Indian soldiers are sacrificing their lives. They also argued that the match could hurt the sentiments of the victims' families.

The PIL also sought directions to bring the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) under the purview of the Ministry of Sports. It also requested the implementation of the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, to make cricketing decisions more accountable.

During the mentioning of the case, the counsel for the petitioners requested the bench to list the matter for Friday, but Justice J.K. Maheshwari shot down the request, stating, "The match must go on". The court maintained its stance, refusing to intervene.

The Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled to begin on September 9 in the United Arab Emirates. India will play its first match against the United Arab Emirates on September 10. The India vs Pakistan match is scheduled for September 14 in Dubai. There is a possibility of the two teams meeting again on September 21 in the Super 4 stage, should they qualify. If both teams qualify for the final, fans could witness a third India vs Pakistan match on September 28.

Eight teams have been divided into two groups for the Asia Cup 2025. Group A consists of India, Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, while Group B includes Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, and Bangladesh. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super 4 stage, and the top two teams from the Super 4 stage will compete in the final on September 28.

India has won the Asia Cup eight times, making them the most successful team in the tournament's history. Sri Lanka has won the Asia Cup six times, while Pakistan has emerged victorious twice.

The Asia Cup 2025 will be broadcasted on Sony Sports Network in India. Live streaming will be available on SonyLIV on a subscription basis.
